TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION DECEMBER 9, 2021 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine, Gibson Hopper, Danielle Cox, Brian Blalock, Courtney Theis. Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:05 am. I. Approval of Agenda Ms. Cox moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – November 11, 2021 Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment Ms. Sutherland stated that the latest edition of the Historical Society magazine highlighted Danielle Cox and her internship and included an article by Courtney Theis. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed her update with the Commission. V. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Action and Update Budget Ms. Theis updated the Commission on the budget. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Update on the Grace Bridge and signage Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the Grace Bridge and Jennie Moore marker. C. Special Collection and Research Committee 1. Discuss Oral Histories 2. Museum Proposal Mr. Hopper updated the Commission on the oral histories, museum, and archival items. He stated that oral histories would be scheduled starting after the holidays. Ms. Gabriel moved for approval to order an archival box for display of textiles up to $100. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor.  Historical Commission December 9, 2021 Page 2 of 2 D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discussion and Action on Military Tour Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the military tour. Mr. Blalock moved for approval to add the military tour as presented as one of the tours available for the public through the website and historical app. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. 2. Discussion and Action Christmas Parade Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on his progress on construction of items for the parade. Mr. Blalock moved for approval for purchase of candy canes for the Christmas parade up to $50. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. 3. Discussion and Action on Cresco Award Ms. Miller stated that no applications have been received for nomination for the Cresco award. Ms. Theis stated that she reached out regarding the school house, but has not gotten a response. E. Marketing Committee--No update F. Black History Month Committee 1. Discuss Black History Month Mr. Hine updated the Commission on progress with the events for February. Ms. Cox moved for approval of $3,500 for the Black History Month events. Mr. Hine seconded the motion. All in favor. VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that the following items should be included on next month’s agenda: ➢ Budget ➢ Grace bridge and signage ➢ Oral histories ➢ Archival items ➢ Cresco Award ➢ Spanish/French Invasion project ➢ Black History Month There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:53 am.
