HISTORICAL COMMISSION
JANUARY 13, 2022
MINUTES
Present: Brian Blalock, Danielle Cox, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine,
Gibson Hopper.
Absent: Courtney Theis, Deborah Sutherland, Chair.
Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Bennett, Lynnette Lynes
Ms. Miller called the meeting to order at 8:04 am.
Ms. Gabriel moved to appoint Mr. Blalock as temporary chair. Mr. Hopper
seconded the motion. All in favor.
I. Approval of Agenda
Ms. Cox moved for approval of the agenda. Ms. Gabriel seconded the motion. All
in favor.
II. Approval of Minutes –December 9, 2021
Ms. Cox moved for approval of the minutes. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion.
All in favor.
III. Public Comment
Ms. Hine expressed appreciation for the efforts and work the Historical
Commission is doing, particularly highlighting the sweetgrass basketmakers, and
the events for Black History Month.
IV. Staff Update
Ms. Miller reviewed the update with the Commission.
V. Committee Action Items
A. Chairman and vice-chairman elections
Ms. Cox moved to defer election of chair and vice-chair. Mr. Hopper
seconded the motion. All in favor.
B. Adoption of Rules of Procedure (Bylaws)
Mr. Hopper moved for deferral of adoptionof the Rules of Procedure. Ms.
Gabriel seconded the motion. All in favor.
C. Organization and Administration Committee
1. Action and Update Budget
Ms. Gabriel moved for approval of reimbursement of expenses for
the Christmas parade to Mr. Blalock. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion.
All in favor.

D. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee
1. Update on the Grace Bridge and signage
Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the text. The Commission
agreed that more information should be included and brought back for
review and approval.
Ms. Gabriel provided draft text for the Jennie Moore marker.
E. Special Collection and Research Committee
1. Discuss Oral Histories
Mr. Hopper stated that COVID has slowed progress with oral
histories.
2. Archival items
Mr. Hopper reiterated that the archival box arrived and the Moultrie
Letterman sweater has been stored.
F. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee
1. Discussion and Action on Cresco Award
Mr. Blalock suggested that more information is needed. Ms. Miller
stated that no new applications have been received.
The Commission agreed to further discuss this at their next meeting.
2. Spanish and French Invasion Project
Mr. Blalock stated that he is still trying to schedule a meeting with
Mr. Bostic regarding this project.
G. Marketing Committee—No update
H. Black History Month Committee
1. Discuss Black History Month
Ms. Miller stated that the library is not available and suggested that
the event could be held at Town Hall. She stated that the events will be
videoed and available to view online as well
Mr. Hine updated the Commission on those participating in the
events in February.
VI. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items
The Commission agreed the following items should be included on next
month’s agenda:
➢ Blessing of the Fleet event
➢ Cresco Award

➢ Jennie Moore School
➢ Black History Month
Mr. Hoper moved for approval of the items listed above to be included on next
month’s agenda. Ms. Cox seconded the motion. All in favor.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:04 am.
