TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL COMMISSION MEETING APRIL 14, 2022 MINUTES Present: Deborah Sutherland, Chair, Brian Blalock, Courtney Theis, Pamela Gabriel, William Hine, Gibson Hopper. Absent: Danielle Cox Staff: Kate Miller, Aaron Butner, Lynnette Lynes Ms. Sutherland called the meeting to order at 8:02 am. I. Approval of Agenda Mr. Blalock moved for approval of the agenda. Mr. Hopper seconded the motion. All in favor. II. Approval of Minutes – March 10, 2022 Mr. Hopper moved for approval of the minutes. Ms. Theis seconded the motion. All in favor. III. Public Comment There being no comments, Ms. Sutherland continued with the agenda. IV. Staff Update Ms. Miller reviewed staff update with the Commission. V. Presentation and Request by Citizen about Signage in Traffic Circle Mr. Rick Gutowski, 1216 Collier Street, reviewed his request for the Commission to name the traffic circles in honor of African Americans. He stated that because Rifle Range Road is a state road, the state would need to approve the request. He stated that he is working with Congressman Bustos to get approval from the State. He asked that the Commission approve and support this project. The Commission received this as information and stated that they would forward the information to the Transportation Committee of Council. Historical Commission April 14, 2022 Page 2 of 3 VI. Committee Action Items A. Organization and Administration Committee 1. Budget Update Ms. Theis updated the Commission on the budget. Ms. Miller and Ms. Lynes stated that there are some discrepancies between what the Commission has noted and what is included in the financial report, so it will need to be reconciled. B. Historical Markers and Interpretation Committee 1. Update and Action on the Grace Bridge and signage Ms. Gabriel reviewed her report with the Commission. She suggested that for the Bridge signage, there should be three interpretative signs that would be placed in succession near the truss of the Grace Bridge. Mr. Gutowski suggested that previous Quick Fact Fridays (QFF)were done on the bridges that could be used as a resource. The Commission agreed that three signs should be considered and text completed for them. 2. Discuss and Action on Jennie Moore School text Ms. Gabriel updated the Commission on the marker text. 3. Discuss and Vote on Cresco Award The Commission agreed to defer this item. C. Special Collection and Research Committee Mr. Hopper updated the Commission on the progress of getting oral histories completed. He stated that Ann Edwards was the most recent person interviewed. Mr. Hopper stated that he is working with an independent company on an option for a display case for the letterman sweater. Historical Commission April 14, 2022 Page 3 of 3 D. Tourism and Community Outreach Committee 1. Discuss and Action on Blessing of the Fleet Mr. Blalock updated the Commission on the tent and activities for the Blessing of the Fleet. E. Marketing Committee Ms. Sutherland stated that Ms. Cox has been working on new QFFs and doing a great job. F. Black History Month Committee Mr. Hine stated that next year there are four Saturdays in February. He suggested that the dedication of naming the Rifle Range Road traffic circle could be another event for the month and done on a different day other than Saturday. VII. Discussion of Next Month’s Agenda Items The Commission agreed that next month’s agenda should include the following items: ➢ Budget update ➢ Traffic Circle and suggested Names ➢ Bridge signage ➢ Jennie Moore School text ➢ Rules of Procedures revisions ➢ Blessing of the Fleet ➢ Black History Month There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 9:18 am.
