TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA MOUNT PLEASANT YOUTH COUNCIL Thursday, September 17, 2020 5:00 PM Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Ms. Sims called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m. Youth Council Members present were Mr. Chad Weis, Ms. Eliza Taylor, Mr. Myles Chisolm, Mr. Ethan Curb, Ms. Cally DeMoura, Ms. Isabel Raykova, Mr. McClain Stoklosa, Ms. Abby Sullivan. Ms. Josie Massanet joined the meeting electronically prior to her arrival. Mr. Walker Carswell and Ms. Isabelle Turner were absent at call to order. 1. Welcome and Introductions Mr. Weis, Ms. Taylor, Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Stoklosa, Ms. Raykova, Ms. DeMoura, Mr. Curb, Mr. Chisolm and Ms. Massanet all introduced themselves. Ms. Sims introduced Kate Miller who would be taking over while Ms. Sims is out in February, March and April. 2. Public Comments There were no public comments. 3. Approval of the minutes from the February 20, 2020 meeting Ms. Turner moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Mr. Chisolm. All present voted in favor. 4. Discussion and selection of priority projects for the session Ms. Sims reviewed the prior year priority projects and what was addressed in the previous year. The Youth Council Members discussed the priority projects they would like to address for the coming year. Mr. Carswell arrived at 5:20 p.m. Ms. Turner arrived at 5:29 p.m. Ms. Massanet arrived at 5:35 p.m. The priority projects presented were as follows: • Youth Council 2020-2021 Projects • *Mental Health Awareness & Assistance o Suicide awareness & prevention o Free resources for students • Cultural Festival o In conjunction with CAP Commission o Possibly include non-competitive sports offering during this event o Add in charity component • Teen Drug Use: Vaping • Human Trafficking Awareness • Outreach re: socioeconomic diversity in schools o College fair/ assistance with college applications o Collaboration with libraries • Shem Creek cleanup event/oyster re-nourishment • Community-wide clean-up/education campaign • Various social media campaigns Ms. DeMoura moved to approve the priority projects as discussed this evening, seconded by Ms. Massanet. All present voted in favor. 5. Call for nominations for Chair and Vice-Chair positions Mr. Chisolm, Ms. Massanet and Ms. Turner all stated their interest in being nominated Chair of the 2020-2021 Youth Council. Ms. DeMoura, Ms. Taylor and Ms. Sullivan all stated their interest in being nominated Vice Chair of the 2020-2021 Youth Council. Ms. Sims asked all of the candidates to be prepared at the next meeting to state why they should be elected Chair and Vice Chair. 6.
