TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA MOUNT PLEASANT YOUTH COUNCIL Thursday, May 20, 2021 5:00 PM Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Ms. Massenet called the meeting to order at 5:12 p.m. Youth Council Members Eliza Taylor, Abby Sullivan, Isabelle Turner, Walker Carswell were all present. Chad Weis participated electronically. Cally DeMoura, Myles Chisolm, Ethan Curb, Isabel Raykova and McClain Stoklosa were all absent. 1. Public Comments There were no public comments. 2. Approval of the minutes from the April 15, 2021 meeting Ms. Massenet moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Ms. Turner. All present voted in favor. 3. Update regarding the Cultural Fair Ms. Sims stated there is a food truck rodeo scheduled for the same day as the Cultural Fair so there will not be any food trucks available to participate. She stated there is a list of ethnic and cultural groups in Charleston and the ones she contacted and heard back from all stated that due to COVID they are not participating in events for the first half of the year. Ms. Sims stated Corey Alston would be at the Cultural Fair telling Gullah Geechee stories on stage prior to the race awards ceremony. The Cultural, Arts and Pride Commission will have a table, and the Charleston Port and Seafarers Society would also be there. She stated since is event will be scaled down, rather than working the fair, volunteer hours would be spent supporting the Sweetgrass Half Marathon and everyone should be at the Park West Recreational Complex at 7:30 a.m. Ms. Sims asked Ms. Turner if she would be responsible for the social media posts.  Mount Pleasant Youth Council May 20, 2021 Page 2 of 3 Ms. Massenet asked if everyone should be in attendance and Ms. Sims responded in the affirmative. 4. Updates regarding other priority projects Ms. Sims said Youth Council voted at the July meeting to support an art show for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). She is still trying to reach the director to coordinate having Youth Council Members be involved in the set-up and breakdown of the event. Ms. Sims said if they were involved, that would take them into June, and the intent of the Youth Council terms was to follow the school year, from August to June. Ms. Sims said she thought many of the members may have vacation plans and she wanted to see if they still want to participate and have a June meeting. She did not want to commit the Youth Council if there would not be enough people to participate. Ms. Sims said the dates for the event were May 27 for set-up and June 13 for breakdown. Ms. Massenet asked if we could commit to having everyone set up and then whoever is available could assist with the breakdown. Ms. Sims responded in the affirmative. Ms. Sims asked if they wanted to commit to whoever is available instead of making it an official Youth Council event. The members responded in the affirmative. Ms. Sims said she would send out an e- mail for sign-up. The members said they would like to decide later if there was a need for a June meeting. Mr. Carswell asked if the Youth Council terms ended in June or July. Ms. Sims responded the terms ended in June, to follow the school year, and added she is waiting to hear from Councilmember Rambo about having Youth Council give an overview of their session to the Education Committee. She said there may also be recognition of graduating seniors. Ms. Sims said the applications for the next Youth Council session have gone live and asked if she could have members from each of the schools pass along the information to the appropriate parties.
