TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA MOUNT PLEASANT YOUTH COUNCIL Thursday, September 16, 2021 5:00 PM Mount Pleasant Municipal Complex Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Ms. Sims called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m. Youth Council Members Graci Canon, Cally DeMoura, Adam El-Hassan, Garrett Griffin, Grace Griffin, Willa Jones, Geneva Kowbeidu, Caroline Tiller, Isabelle Turner and Chad Weis were all present. McKenna Young arrived at 5:07 p.m. Mr. Stoklosa was absent. 1. Public Comments There were no public comments. 2. Approval of the minutes from the August 5, 2021 meeting Ms. Turner moved to approve the minutes, seconded by Ms. DeMoura. All present voted in favor (Ms. Young was absent for the vote). 3. Election of Chair and Vice-Chair positions Ms. Turner presented her case as to why she should be elected as Chair. Ms. Sims played a video sent in by Mr. Stoklosa presenting his case as to why he should be elected as Chair. Mr. El-Hassan presented his case as to why he should be elected as Vice Chair. Mr. Weis presented his case as to why he should be elected as Vice Chair. (Miss Young arrived at 5:07 p.m.) The Youth Council Members voted via ballot and Ms. Sims stated the Members elected Ms. Turner as the Chair and Mr. El- Hassan as the Vice Chair. 4. Discussion and approval of priority projects Discussion was held to decide on projects that would be addressed during this session of Youth Council. Ms. Sims introduced Town Council Member Guang Ming Whitley. Ms. Whitley thanked the Youth Council Members for dedicating their time. Ms. Whitley stated Palmetto Girls State and Palmetto Boys State are week-long government simulation programs in the summer after Junior year in high school. She said each year two students from each of those programs are selected to go to Girls Nation and Boys Nation which is in Washington, DC and simulates federal government. Ms. Whitley said that was the inspiration for the Youth Council. Ms. Whitley said she was speaking at Girls State in 2019 and many of the young women were asking about how they could get involved, and that inspired her to come back to Mount Pleasant and instigate the creation of the Youth Council. Ms. Whitley said she was excited to see what they were working on for this session and thanked them for everything they are doing for the community. After further discussion, Ms. Turner moved to approve the priority projects (as listed below), seconded by Mr. El-Hassan. All present voted in favor. Ms. Sims stated Ms. Turner will be contacting the Youth Council Members each month to ask for agenda items, and the Members are also able to contact Ms. Turner at any time to add something to an agenda for discussion. 5.
