TOWN OF MOUNT PLEASANT, SOUTH CAROLINA RECREATION ADVISORY COMMISSION Tuesday June 20, 2023, 1:00pm Council Chambers 100 Ann Edwards Lane Mount Pleasant, SC 29464 Minutes Present: Perry Rourk, Chair; Lynne Moore, Michelle Cormack; Renkin Carlin; Frederick Rodewoldt; Kevin Kollegger; April Gift; Greer Hanlon; Keely Enright; Key Ayoub Absent: John Dodds; Tripp Cuttino Staff Present: Steve Gergick I. Call to Order Called to order at 1:02pm II. Approval of April 12th, 2023 and May 16th, 2023 Minutes Motioned by Mr. Ayoub and seconded by Ms. Renken; Unanimously passed. III. Public Comment Mayor Will Haynie of 316 Mallard Ct., addressed the Fiason Road agenda item. IV. Discussion and possible action regarding a recommendation to the Health, Recreation and Events Committee for multipurpose fields to be considered as a component of the use of the Faison Road Town owned property. Mr. Rourk discussed the conversations that have been had regarding the space on Faison Road. Mr. Gergick presented the three proposed schemes for Faison. Mr. Ayoub asked if there was a need for more space to meet the needs of the Recreation Department, not including field rentals. Mr. Gergick said there was not a need. Ms. Moore addressed the concerns of the Senior Community and questioned how that is demographic benefiting from the multi- purpose fields. There was a discussion. Mr. Hanlon asked why the property was originally purchased. Mr. Gergick said he believed the property was purchased for economic development purposes. There is discussion about the physical aspects of the property and options for use of the property. Mr. Rourk made a motion to make a recommendation to the HREC to have a Recreation Component to the Faison Property; Seconded by Mr. Kollegger; Passed 9-1 V. Discussion and possible action regarding a recommendation to the Health, Recreation and Events Committee for a reduction in fees for volunteer MPRD coaches. Mr. Gergick explained that volunteer coaches do not receive a discount. There is discussion on the impact of giving a reduction in fees and the economic impact on the department. There was discussion on the prior discount policies and volunteer retention. Mr. Kollegger asked to consider a discount in future budget. There was discussion regarding need-based discounts, levels of discounts, and how they would be implemented. There was a discussion. Ms. Moore inquired if there was a coaching shortage. Mr. Gergick explained the current coaching environment. There was a discussion about recognition for volunteers. VI. Update on Recreation Referendum and MPRD Capital and Maintenance Projects Mr. Gergick gave an update on projects. There was a discussion. Mr. Ayoub asked about the youth triathlon. Mr. Gergick gave an update. Mr. Rourk asked about Rugby. Mr. Gergick said there is a summer camp. Ms. Gift asked about the Mugsy Tennis Center. Mr. Gergick gave an update.
