partners with the Murphy Chamber of Commerce, which offers scholarships. She
provided the Murphy Chamber of Commerce website, directed attendees to the
scholarship tab, and shared Luke Trahan’s contact information for further inquiries
noting that he oversees the chamber.
B. Work Session – Ideas for New Recreation Programs
Staff and board will conduct a collaborative work session to identify and evaluate
potential new recreation programs for future consideration.
The group brainstormed several new program concepts which included, paid internships
and job shadowing opportunities modeled after successful city programs like the Plano
Mayor's Internship. Expanding from Pickleball to other sports such as basketball and
considering tournaments during school breaks for maximum participation. Organizing a
cultural festival inviting school clubs and community groups to share food and
traditions. Enhanced tutoring programs utilizing local teachers and students. Business
and entrepreneurship workshops, possibly including day trading or college application
guidance, ideally as a free or very low-cost offering. The group also noted most event and
program information comes via social media, especially Instagram though their
awareness of the Murphy Parks and Recreation account is low. They suggested boosting
Instagram presence, using funny reels, clear flyers with concise detail events, leveraging
school newspapers, newsletters and flyers for broader reach.
