CITY OF NORMAN, OK HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING Municipal Building, Executive Conference Room 201 West Gray St., Norman, OK 73069 Monday, June 27, 2022 at 5:30 PM MINUTES The Human Rights Commission of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Municipal Complex located at 201 West Gray Street on June 27, 2022, at 5:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were duly posted 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. MINUTES 1. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FOR THE APRIL 22, 2022, AND THE MAY 23, 2022, REGULAR MEETINGS Motion was made by Chair Owen to approve the Minutes for the April 22, 2022, and the May 23, 2022, regular meetings and the motion was duly seconded by Commissioner Farley. A vote was taken with the following results: all approved, and none opposed. The Minutes were approved by unanimous vote. AGENDA ITEMS 2. INTRODUCTION OF NEW COMMISSIONERS, DR. BINBIN WENG AND AISHA ALI HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION MEETING - Monday, June 27, 2022 Page |1  New Commissioners, Dr. Binbin Weng and Aisha Ali, briefly introduced themselves to meeting attendees. 3. DISCUSSION REGARDING NORMAN PARKS & RECREATION CHILD CARE SERVICES Veronica Tracy, Recreation Manager, gave a slideshow presentation describing the efforts of her department to provide affordable child care services to anyone that needs it. Program partners include Sodexho who provides meals and NPS who provides transportation from schools to the afterschool program locations. Ms. Tracy said the goal is to combat adverse childhood experiences by providing a safe place for children after school. Most recently they’ve been able to lower the cost of the program to allow more participation to help families that don’t generally qualify for daycare assistance but find full costs to be prohibitive. While the three main locations for care include the recreation center at 12th Avenue NE, Irving Middle School, and Whittier Middle School, they are actively looking for additional locations. Their current locations are always full and they maintain a waiting list for those looking to attend when openings are available. The location must be large enough, in good condition and low cost to rent. 4. DISCUSSION AND CHAIR UPDATE REGARDING PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL EVENT ON HOMELESSNESS Chair Owen said today marked the first day the city shelter was closed. Mr. Purinton said the City was actively looking to contract with local agencies to provide a day and/or night shelter. An RFP for this opens soon and copies were sent out to as many entities as possible in order to garner a large response. Mr. Purinton will give an update at the next HRC meeting. MISCELLANEOUS DISCUSSION Chair Owen would like to do something like a symbolic gesture to acknowledge the recent Supreme Court decision to reverse the Roe v. Wade ruling. She asked commissioners to submit their ideas to her so she can review them with Mr. Purinton in time to place the item on the agenda for the next meeting.
