Norman Public Library Board Meeting March 11, 2024 The Norman Public Library Board met on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at the Norman Public Library East Branch, 3051 E. Alameda St., Norman, Oklahoma 73071 Meeting Minutes Meeting was called to order at 4:35 Roll Call Sue Ringus (Chair), Jason Bingham (Vice-Chair), Megan Straughan (Secretary), Sarah Moran, Jayme Shelton, Jody Foote, Laura Doughty Not in attendance: Debra Engel Introduction of Staff and Guests Caroline Dulworth, Director of Branch Services Kelsey Williamson, Norman East Branch Manager Beverley Theige, Children’s Manager Roxanne Pico-Lenz, Circulation Manager at Norman Central Hailey Carol, Library Associate Norman West Consider and vote to approve/ disapprove/ take other action on minutes from previous meeting Secretary Straughan motioned to approve minutes, Vice-Chair Bingham seconded. Vote to approve previous minutes was unanimous. Branch updates Several staff members discussed their presentations at the recent Oklahoma Library Association Conference Roxanne Pico-Lenz, Circulation Manager at Norman Central ● Strategies to funding arts in the library (music, dance, embroidery, etc.) including performers ● Workshops during Jazz in June with the musicians ● Partnering with Firehouse, Fred Jones Art museum, and FAM ● Crown’s tea (19th annual) ○ 100+ in attendance ○ Panel of artists, performances, tea Hailey Carol, Library Associate Norman West ● “Full STEAM ahead” program presented at OLA ● First Saturday STEAM series at West ● Outreach to schools regularly ● Membership engagement presentation ● Impact Leadership Team (Impact PLS) ○ Responding to media requests Beverley Theige, Children’s Manager ● Presentation: The impact of enhanced storytimes on early literacy practices at home ● Focusing on distributing knowledge/skills to caregivers ○ Increasing knowledge increases confidence and competence ○ Identifying asides librarians can do during storytime to demonstrate evidence-based tactics for caregivers Board members discussed opportunities to attend next OLA conference 3/12/25 - 3/15/25 Beverly Theige presented on spring break activities being offered ● Bug fest 3/21/24 at The Well ● Seed bomb making program ● Guinea pig storytime ● Lots of story times and STEAM activities Kelsey Williamson discussed other activities at East and other branches ● Lots of eclipse programming ready for 4/8/24 ● Stargazing night 3:15 7-8:30 ● Observation deck is open ● Most branches will have eclipse events on the day ● Sound of Science series during spring break with local musicians ● Eclipse glasses available at various programs Old Business No old business New Business Central Repair Updates ● Cavin’s mold remediation complete, air quality is excellent ● Leaks are not active ● Complete cause is not yet known ○ Envelope specialists have completed their assessment, but have not submitted their report ● Repair/construction process in progress ● 5 librarians from Central now embedded in Norman Public Schools Board Comments Chair Ringus discussed Associate Director Dulworth’s OU Alumni Award win with almost 20 years of distinguished service in the library. The board congratulated and thanked Director Dulworth for her work and many excellent projects. Comments from the Public No comments Next Meeting: June 17, 2024, 4:30 pm at Norman Library West Adjournment Member Moran motioned to adjourn the meeting, Member Foote seconded. Vote to adjourn was unanimous.
