Norman Public Library Board Minutes June 19, 2017 The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in Room A/B of the Norman Public Library on the 19**’ day of June, 2017, at 4:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Note: bold formatting indicates action items. ITEM 1, being: ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Bird, Moran, Foote and Ringus Absent: McCutcheon, Engle and Sykes ITEM 2, being: INTRODUCTION OF STAFF AND GUESTS Library Staff Caroline Dulworth, Central Branch Manager; Rebekah Lynam, West Present: Branch Manager; Judy Day, Information Services Department Manager, Tara McLeod Children’s Department Manager and Aaron Pence, Computer Training Center Manager Pioneer Staff Present: Guests: Keith Humphrey, Chief of Police, City of Norman ITEM 3, being: APPROVAL OF MARCH 20, 2017 MEETING MINUTES Ringus made the motion and Foote seconded to approve the March 20, 2017 meeting minutes. The vote was taken with the following results: AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Bird, Moran, Foote and Ringus NAY: None ITEM 4, being: AFTER-SCHOOL AND CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS PRESENATION AND DISCUSSSION: KEITH HUMPHREY. CHIEF OF POLICE. CITY OF NORMAN Began with Caroline Dulworth expressing appreciation for the Norman Police Department (NPD) and staff for providing security. 50-60% of the library security comes from NPD. Keith Humphrey reviewed numerous areas of concern and existing programs through the NPD and othenwise including School Resource Officers. Juvenile Intervention Program. Police Activities League. Emotional/Mental Crisis Intervention. Crime Free Multi Housing Program, school and nutrition programs, as well as others. Humphrey reviewed what the target focus and successes are of these programs as well as providing additional information and resources for the library to reach out to. Humphrey felt the best area of focus for a new program would be to target Middle Schools and to focus on topics of Team Building. Self Esteem, and Decision Making. ITEM 5. being: NORMAN FORWARD ART PROJECT REPORT: CARLA KIMBERLING Received a bid by James Johnson for $30,000 for the East Side Library sculpture. The artist presented photos and a model along with very good references. The proposed sculpture would be 14’ high and weigh 3,000lbs. and would be placed on a cement pad and made of corten so it will patina and match the building over time. The sculpture would be positioned so that the sun would shine through on the solstice onto the buildings. The library may have astronomy programs which coincide with this sculpture and library branch. As we have just completed the ground breaking, the Central Branch has not yet me the $230,000 for art budget. This requirement is part of the Norman Forward program requiring 1% for art. as voted on by the community. ITEM 6. being: STAFF REPORTS AND UPDATES a. Summer Reading Programs and Events. “Readers Extravaganza. Summer Reading around the theme of “Build a Better World” which has online sign up as well as in person sign up at both Central and West locations. “Read to Me” program. b. Central, West Side & East Branch Updates Librarians are visiting many schools and facilities and participating in programs to be out in the community. “School of Rock” sponsored by Guitar Center, kids filming program making a documentary for CCFI. Contract Caroline and Tara if you see other opportunities to engage with library customers. c. Featured upcoming Norman Public Library Programs and Events New calendar of events featuring many upcoming events for a variety of age groups. Examples include: Children’s STEAM programs, Ozo Bots programing, variety of craft programs, mindfulness & meditation program. Animal Architects, Gardening Workshop, Why Birds Matter, Cookbook Swap & Shop, Tween Leadership Workshop, Mike Hosty Build a Better Song, Children’s Chamber Music Concert, Facebook for Business, and Trigger Point Release for Shoulder and Back. ITEM 7, being: OLD BUSINESS None ITEM 8, being: NEW BUSINESS None ITEM 9, being: BOARD COMMENTS None ITEM 10, being: COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None ITEM 11, being: ADJOURNMENT Bird made the motion and Kimberling seconded to adjourn.
