Norman Public Library Board Minutes March 11, 2019 The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Pioneer Library Administration Conference Room adjacent to the Norman Public Library West, 300 Norman Center Court, Norman, OK 73072 on the 11th day of March, 2019, at 4:30 p.m., and notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Note: bold formatting indicates action items. ITEM 1, being: ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Engel, Ringus*, Foote*, Moran, Turner and Bird *Arrived after 4:32PM, absent for items 1-3, present for items 4 and after. Absent: McCutcheon ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 2, being: INTRODUCTION OF STAFF AND GUESTS Library Staff: Caroline Dulworth, Central Branch Manager; Mike Pearson, West Branch Manager; Tara McCleod, Children’s Department Manager; Aaron Pence, Computer Training Center Manager, Joshua Peck, Information Services Manager Pioneer Library Staff: Lisa Wells, Executive Director City Staff: (None) Guests: (None) ____________________________________________________________________________ ITEM 3, being: APPROVAL OF DECEMBER 17, 2018 MEETING MINUTES Foote made the motion and Vice Chairman Kimberling seconded to approve the December 17, 2018 meeting minutes. The vote was taken with the following results: AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Engel, Moran, Turner and Bird  NAY: None ITEM 4, being: NORMAN FORWARD ART PROJECT REPORT: VICE CHAIR CARLA KIMBERLING The artist designing the new Central Library outdoor sculpture is scheduled to be in town the week of June 11th to review work. Project is not expected to be completed until about the end of June. ITEM 5, being: PRESENTATION REGARDING NEW PLS ONLINE SERVICES SUCH AS KANOPY, HOOPLA AND LIBBY: MIKE PIERSON Kanopy: Source for movies, documentaries, independent films, and mostly educational items however the collection does include some criterion and foreign films and PBS. Kanopy allows immediate access, 6 items per month which can be watched for 3 days but multiple times within that time frame (similar to an itunes rental). This is different from Overdrive which can only check out one item at a time. Also has built in software to make a clip or playlists which would be helpful in a teaching capacity for example. Another advantage is the Library will be able to show movies and promote them by naming films by name, helpful for putting out the word on social media, etc. There is a kids section & movies and you can manage the child’s account and add parental controls. You can add the child’s card to your account. There is a history option to keep track of what you watched (or not) and a watch list to manager favorites or things you want to see. There a lot of educational courses on there but be mindful that each one is a credit so it can be easy to eat up monthly credits quickly with 30 minute courses. Note: you can also sync the OKC Metro Library system for an additional 6 credits. Hoopla (hoopladigital.com): Source for music, comics, audio books, e-books. Music is checked out by album for a week and can be streamed or downloaded. All others are 3 week rentals. TV shows each episode is a credit and with comics sometimes each issue is a credit, other times multiple issues for a single credit. Can set up a kids mode on settings with optional tracking and borrowing history. It can make recommendations based on previous borrowing history and there is a favorites option. Like Kanopy it is 6 credits a month and can use the Metro library system to check out an additional 6. The library budgeted $25,000 for these services and have already spent half so library customers really like it. Libby: Can check out 10 items at a time, return and then check out again. More like physical books, there is a limited # of copies per library so you may have to wiat. Overdrive is pushing the Libby app instead of their old Overdrive app. ITEM 6, being: PROGRESS OF NEW CENTRAL LIBRARY AND UPCOMING RELATED EVENTS The city received bids back for the furniture package of the new library. The hope is to hear back in the next 2 weeks about shelving since the new collection delivery can’t be scheduled until there is a place to put it. Effort in progress to weed out old books and there will be a Friends of the Library book sale in May. The Friends of the Library are looking at a sale as part of the City of Norman garage sale to unload old furniture, puzzles, etc. The Friends of the Library are looking at a book store to sell in. The Oklahoma Geneology Society is also coordinating their move in. Tiling is going bathroom by bathroom. We are still looking at a late Summer opening. ITEM 7, being: PLS READS A few titles were put out including 2 books on racism and its effect on the community. The books are “The Hate you Give” geared toward high school age readers and “Small Great Things.” As a reminder this is not the same as the Big Read event, these are new books. In relation there are the following upcoming events: - April 18th Beloved Community Talk - April 6th 6:00 PM Screening of “The Hate You Give at the Sooner Theater. There will also be screenings in Shawnee and Purcell. ITEM 8, being: SPECIAL SPRING BREAK CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Something every day of Spring Break at the Central Library: Monday 18th All About Alpacas Tuesday 19th Alligators, Snakes, Turtles, etc. Wednesday 20th Fred Rogers Birthday with sweater donation drive, kindness tree, etc. Thursday 21st Absolutely Incredible Kids Party (dance party & obstacle course) Friday 22nd Recycled box city 4 different 5 day camps: - Learn how to make a video game - Roblox - Professional game making (2 different age groups) Knot tying workshop Old fashioned board games Smoothie creation Showing Fred Rogers documentary March 20th West Library daily events: Monday 18th Squishy Circuits Tuesday 19th Magazine Wall Art Wednesday 20th Lego We Do Thursday 21st Vinyl Stickers from make mobile Friday 22nd Celtic Knot rocks from maker mobile (using laser cutter to cut designs on rocks) East Library events: Library System Foundation Grant – Growing a Greener Norman Tuesday 19th DIY Taco Tuesday to learn how to grow herbs for seasoning and earbud holders that look like tiny tacos. Wednesday 20th DIY plastic bag jump ropes Thursday 21st Bilingual art program ITEM 9, being: BRANCH UPDATES Monthly bilingual songs and stories Still doing a Readers Extravaganza for Teen readers byur for the adults instead setting up interesting tables. More interesting people coming in the year. Probably will cease all programming at the Central Library in Junes and will be lighter this year due to the new building and move. Central: Free Family Resource Fair with car seat checks Topics Tuesday – international student speakers talking about their experiences. West: 26th 6:00PM – Intro to Hip Hop April 20th Partner Dancing Open Streets this year will be April 14th on the Street North of the Mall and the maker mobile will be there March 27th Baron Ryan Hiring for a few positions East: Full size Smithsonian exhibit: Waterways. Shows how water impacts our world. Continuing to give tours of the branch ITEM 10, being:  NPS LIBRARY TOUR REPORT Overall impressed by the different types of technology. There was a maker space which included a 3D printer, circuit, computers, physical art materials, music making program and work station, and sowing machine. Facilities were structured with a lot of break out group rooms with TVs, hand held and mounted white boards, and more of a small group approach. In the library was a student IT functioning almost like an internship, similar to a Geek Squad or Apple store. They have a café run by Sodexo so students can get food items there even when on free or reduced lunch (which is applicable to over half of all the students). In the remodel there was an effort to make the library the heart of the school. It now connects the science building to the main building when previously the only access was by walking outside.
