Norman Public Library Board Minutes December 16, 2019 The Public Library Board of the City of Norman, Cleveland County, State of Oklahoma, met in the Pioneer Library Administration Conference Room adjacent to the Norman Public Library West, 300 Norman Center Court, Norman, OK 73072 on the 16th day of December, 2019, at 4:30 p.in., and notice and agenda of the meeting were posted at the Norman Public Library at 225 North Webster 24 hours prior to the beginning of the meeting. Note: bold formatting indicates action items. ITEM 1, being: ROLL CALL Present: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Foote, Engel, Moran, Ringus andTurner, . Absent: Mccutcheon (Third meeting absent) ITEM 2, being: INTRODUCTION OF STAFF AND GUESTS Library Staff: Caroline Dulworth, Central Branch Manager; Traey Young, West Branch Assistant Manager; Center Manager, Saidah Ydakasai, East Branch Assistant Manager; Nancy Littlejohn. Circulation Manager Pioneer Library Staff: Lisa Wells, Executive Director, Pioneer Library System City Staff: (None) Guests: Scott Martin, President & CEO, Noman Chamber of Commerce ITEM 3, being: APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER 16, 2019 MEETING MINUTES Member Engel made the motion and Member Turner seconded to approve the September 16, 2019 meeting minutes. The vote was taken with the following results: AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Foote, Engel, Moran, Ringus, and Turner  NAY: None ITEM 4, being: SCOTT MARTIN, PRESIDENT & CEO, NORMAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Our guest, former Representative Scott Martin, spoke with the board regarding collaborations between public libraries and the business community. He impressed the directors by showing his first library card from Tulsa, OK. As President and CEO of the Norman Chamber of Commerce he wants to increase these partnerships. One suggested avenue could be at the first Mayor's Summit on Small Business in May, 2020. It would be a good time to show public library resources available for businesses. Mr. Martin shared a vision for Andrews Park to become more like Scissortail Park or the Gathering Place. It could be a bridge between downtown and the library. Communities that are succeeding have many entities coming together and working collaboratively. In all these partnerships the library must be there. These partnerships allow for the sharing of resources and avoid duplication of efforts. ITEM 5, being: NORMAN FORWARD ART PROJECT REPORT Carla Kimberling, representative to the Norman Forward Art Project reporfed there have been no further meetings of this committee. ITEM 6, being: STAFF REPORTS AND UPDATES Central Library - Since the grand opening the library has been busy non-stop. The staff is still working on some technical issues. - lt was reported that the Maker Space has focused on two things. The first is "How To", which is using the equipment. The second is "Make Do", or participate and watch. - Children's programs have picked back up. - There are many bookings for meeting rooms. - Crown's Tea is scheduled for Sunday February 23. - Tax assistance will be offered again this year. - A Spanish story time will begin in January. - The Friends of the Library has established book donations times. They are Tuesday and Thursday from 10-2 and Saturday from 10-2. Patrons may pull up and ring the bell for a truckload of deliveries. -The library is working with the Cleveland County Health Department to promote healthy education including the importance of hydration. Water bottles will be purchased for children to have after they decorate with vinyl from the Maker Space. East Library - The East Library was featured this fall in two national publications, the American Libraries and the Library Journal. - A Healthy Literacy program will begin after the first of the year. Offerings include yoga and meditation. - a $1,000 PLS Foundation grant was awarded to promote reading. VR games for headsets will be purchased along with stationary bikes to exercise while reading. - The library is working with the Cleveland County Health Department to promote healthy education including the importance of hydration. Water bottles are being purchased for children to decorate with vinyl. - An outreach is planned with the Homeland Grocery Store on Alameda one time a month this spring to provide library resources and promote healthy living. Hydration stations will be available and perhaps exercise bikes. West Library - Programming on healthy literacy is planned in coordination with the cafe. -The Lunch and Listening program will be the last Wednesday of the month with Mary Sallee. - Storytelling will be monthly on Saturdays along with other days of the week. An evening story time will take place one time a month. -ln the month of February, the African American read-in will take place. ITEM 7, being: OLD BUSINESS None. ITEM 8, being: NEW BUSINESS Secretary Erica Bird has been appointed to another city board and has resigned. Member Sarah Moran volunteered to assume the position as secretary. Member Ringus nominated Member Moran for Secretary and Member Foote seconded the motion. The vote was taken with the following results: AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice Chair Kimberling, Foote, Engel, Moran, Ringus and Turner NAY: None ITEM 9, being: BOARD COMMENTS None. ITEM 10, being: COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC None. ITEM 11, being: NEXT MEETING Next meeting will be Monday March 9, 2020, 4:30PM at the Central Library Branch. Possible guest may include City Manager, Darrel Pyle. ITEM 12, being: ADJOURNMENT Member Foote made the motion and Member Engel seconded to adjourn the Norman Library Advisory Board meeting. The vote was taken with the following results AYE: Chairman Mauldin, Vice chair Kimberling, Foote, Engel, Moran, Ringus and Turner NAY: None Passed and approved this Monday March 9, 2020. ifez- Tim Mauldin, Chairman  Scott Martin Scott Martin was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Tulsa Memorial High School in 1991 and received his bachelor's degree in Political Science from The University of Oklahoma in 1995. As President/CEO of the Norman Chamber of Commerce, Martin leads Norman's premiere business advocacy organization. Prior to his Chamber career, Martin served the people of House District 46 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 2006 to 2017. As a citizen legislator, Scott also worked for Republic Bank & Trust for 10 years. From 1995 to 1999 Martin worked for the City of Noble as Projects Director and Public Works Director. F`rom 1999 to 2006 he worked for the City of Normafl as the Assistant to the City Manager. He's a member and past president of the Norman Business Association, and a supporter of the many things that makes the community of Norman special like public education, the arts, and social services. Scott is an Eagle Scout, served as Student Body President at OU from 1994 to 1995, and is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity; he is also a graduate of Leadership Norman class of 2000. Martin has been selected as one of OKC Business Joumal's 40 Under F`orty, the Journal Record's Achievers Under 40, the Norman Transcript's 15 Under 40; and has I received the State Chamber of Commerce's Defender of Free Enterprise Award, twice the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Distinguished Service Award, the Govemor's Arts Award, and the OCAST Impact Award. Scott was a 2017 inductee into the Gamma Kappa Chapter of Kappa Sigma Hall of Fame and was named the 2018 New Executive of Year by the Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce Executives. He and his wife Angie are the proud parents of three sons; Luke, Blake, and Colton, and a daughter, Gentry. They attend Bethel Baptist Church in Norman, wriere Scott teaches Sunday School and is a Deacon. Scott and Angie treasure family time; and enjoy the outdoors, adventure, and an active lifestyle.
