NORWICH ICE RINK AUTHORITY MINUTES FROM MEETING HELD August 19, 2010 Authority Attendance: Mike Goldblatt, Mike Schermerhorn, Rich Wolak, and Cheryl Ritacco Absent: Doug Barlow Guest: Jim Sanca, and Mike Arnone MINUTES Meeting was called to order by Michael Goldblatt at 6:20 pm, a quorum was present. Minutes from the July meeting were reviewed. The July minutes were unanimously approved. Public Comments There were no public comments Correspondence There was no correspondence Reports Jim Sanca reported on the following: • Norwich Figure Skating Club will be doing a Holiday Show this November in place of The Nutcracker. Ice rental should be the same as years past. • Public Skate summer promotion will be ending August 31st • The Rink will continue their other ice promotion of every first Saturday of the month Norwich residents skate free. The months excluded are July, December and January. • Norwich Skating School placed 3rd out of 150 teams at the ISI Team World’s competition. Norwich Skating School had large number of volunteers at the event and the overall feeling is that the event was very successful. This was a great way to showcase the Rink and hopefully will lead to hosting tournaments in the future • Southeastern Connecticut Youth Hockey season begins September 8th. • There were 40 players registered for the Bernie Cassell youth hockey clinic and 28 players participated in the checking clinic during the month • The Norwich Skating School staff is seeking approval for a new program “Synchronized Skating” by the Norwich Figure Skating Club. This will help fill  unused ice time and bring in additional revenue. The School requires the approval due to the fact that this is a US circuit sanctioned program and the school is currently ISI sanctioned. The Rink Authority will generate a letter in support of the program and encourage approval by the Club. • Learn to Skate begins September 12th • The Rink currently has 7 teenagers from Norwich Youth Services working and learning job skills • The Rink will begin a 6-week program with Norwich Public Schools that will teach students how to ice skate. The program, scheduled to begin in November, will be open to 100 middle school students. The skating lessons will become part of the Aspire Program. The Aspire Program is paid for with a federal grant provided through the No Child Left Behind Act • At the last meeting The Authority asked the Rink to run a public notice for two new board members, Mia Sanca has verbally approached several people without much success. The Rink will develop further initiatives in the coming month to recruit members for The Authority, filling two vacant seats New Business There was no new business Old Business City Hall has asked The Authority to vote and approve the upcoming budget. Fiscal Year 2010-2011 includes projected total gross revenue of $809,455.00; projected total expenses of $796,153.00 and total net income of $13,302.00.
