NORWICH ICE RINK AUTHORITY MINUTES FROM MEETING HELD April 19, 2011 Authority Attendance: Mike Goldblatt, Mike Schermerhorn and Cheryl Ritacco Absent: Doug Barlow and Rich Wolak, Guest: Jim Sanca, Deb Hinchey and Pete Desaulniers MINUTES Meeting was called to order by Michael Goldblatt at 6:10 pm, a quorum was present. Minutes from the March meeting were reviewed. The March minutes were unanimously approved. Public Comments There were no public comments Correspondence There was no correspondence Reports Jim Sanca reported on the following: • Learn To Skate begins a new session on the first of May with 75 early sign-ups • Norwich Skating School currently has 55 members • Norwich Ice Rink is hosting the 21st Annual District I Competition on June 23rd through the 26th. 51 Members will be attending. • Eighteen NSS members will be attending the ISI World Championships in Minneapolis • Southeastern Connecticut Youth Hockey held their tryouts in early April. More teams will be added this year due to the increase in the number of skaters trying out • A new camp, National Hockey Development Camp, is scheduled for May 21st and 22nd . This is in addition to four previously scheduled in-house camps • The Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Foundation Mens Tournament will be held April 29th - May 1st • The Rink has recently acquired dasher board renewals and new advertisers from Norwich Public Utilities, Hyatt Regency, Mystic Country and Dime Bank • Comcast local access is now running upcoming programming held at The Rink • It was suggested that more events be submitted to the city website  • A representative from Velux, a solar heating company, met with Jim about possible upgrades to The Rink’s system. It will depend on available funds and grant awards • The Rink is entertaining the idea of developing a U16 & U19 girls’ hockey team. Team would be registered with CHC as a Tier 2 level program. This appears to be an optimum time due to fewer opportunities for females as they climb levels • The recommendation to develop a Facebook page was proposed. This is a way to engage current and potential consumers • Utility usage decreased substantially from same time last year. Overall the first quarter numbers are down • P&L report showed the rink in the black for the month of March. Discussion took place on opportunities to increase figure skating income.
