CITY OF NORWICH DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS November 9, 2012 TO: Distribution FROM: Barry Ellison, P.E., Director of Public Works FILE #: PWD 331-12 SUBJECT: MINUTES OF PUBLIC WORKS & CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS COMMITTEE A special meeting of the Public Works and Capital Improvements Committee was held on Thursday, November 8, 2012 at 4:15 p.m. in Room 210 in Norwich City Hall, 100 Broadway. Attendance was as follows: Committee Members Administration Alderman Pete Desaulniers Barry Ellison, Jr., P.E., Director of Public Works Alderwoman Deb Hinchey Alderwoman Sofee Noblick 1. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order at 4:15 p.m. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the August 14, 2012 meeting were unanimously approved as written. (Motion: Hinchey, Second: Noblick) 3. CITIZEN COMMENT None. 4. OLD BUSINESS a. Montville Road Bridge Update: Ellison informed the Committee that the Town of Montville just recently awarded their consulting engineer contract to CLA Engineers. Ellison has spoken with Mayor McDaniel in Montville and both have agreed to hold a project meeting as soon as the consultant contract is fully executed. 5. NEW BUSINESS a. Summary of 2012 Public Works Projects: Ellison presented the Committee with a spreadsheet of projects that have been completed in and/or are still ongoing in calendar year 2012. The total value of these projects is approximately $2.5 million. A brief discussion was held on the paving, chip sealing, and crack sealing projects. Ellison informed the Committee that chip sealing and crack sealing are preventative maintenance measures intended to extend the useful life of streets that are in average or slightly below average condition. Several miles of streets were treated with these measures in 2012 with the intent of extending the life of these streets by approximately 4-6 years. General updates were briefly discussed on several other projects as well. 6. ADOURJNMENT The meeting adjourned at 4:45 pm.
