Members Excused: John Iovino
Also Present: Luis DePina, Recreation Director
Meeting called to order at 6:03 by Chairman Spayne.
Motion to accept minutes of special meeting held on Jan. 27, 2010 made by Ray Stewart
with a second from Bill Nash. Motion passes unanimously.
Recreation Director DePina gave an update regarding the YMCA property. The
Recreation Department is still waiting word on the sale of the North Stonington property.
Once the sale is made we will have a solid number to work with regarding the downtown
building. Meetings with supporters are continuing and a cost effective solution to the
heating issue is being pursued. Volunteers are in place to help with minor electrical and
plumbing repairs, painting, cleaning and landscaping.
DePina also reported on the upcoming program schedule. Registrations have begun for
the summer camp and other programs. It is anticipated that camp will once again run at
capacity. An update was also given on other programs.
The 2010 – 2011 budget was discussed. The Recreation Department is facing some very
deep cuts and will be cutting services. Cuts will force the closure of Mohegan Park
Beach, eliminate the lighting of several courts, and impact the ability for the department
to adequately maintain facilities. A brief discussion followed.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted
