ROSE CITY SENIOR CENTER 8 Mahan Drive, Norwich, Connecticut 06360 (860) 889-5960  fax: (860) 885-1160 SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION Meeting of April 15, 2013 Members in Attendance: Chairperson Olive Buddington, Vice Chairperson Gen Bergendahl, Secretary Margaret Aldrich, and Alternate Members Frank Jacaruso and Jan Stewart. Absent were Regular Members Michael Lahan and Jacquelyn Randall. Attending staff members were Beverly Goulet, Mike Wolak and Anne Barriere. Chairperson Olive Buddington determined there was a quorum and called the meeting to order. Minutes: The minutes from 03-18-13 were approved as corrected (copy enclosed). Communications: Mike received a $275 donation from CSEA, a group who uses our building for their monthly meetings. Two members recently passed away, Rose Perrone a couple of weeks ago and Ida Dilimetinian back in December. Rose’s family had suggested donations to the Senior Center in lieu of flowers and Ida had left some things to the Senior Center though we don’t know yet what. She had loved coming to the Senior Center for a long time and we appreciate them both thinking of us in this way. Margaret’s Letter to the Editor celebrating the 10th Annual Corned Beef and Cabbage fundraiser luncheon was printed in the March 27th Norwich Bulletin. In it, she gave thanks to all the hard working volunteers including the NFA National Honor Society students and Irene’s for the donated pizza for the workers. Well done! Human Services Report: Last week Bev presented our budget at 9:00-9:30 pm to the City Council. Such a late time slot is frustrating to staff and prohibitive to seniors and the public who might want to attend. Bev hopes to address this problem in the future. The discrimination investigation is nearly concluded including interviews of about ten people here at the Center and is now awaiting the finalization of the report. Senior Center Report: We have started the program with the nursing students from across the street. The last two Thursdays they have come over, four at a time, generally two are placed in the Clinic with the nurse and two either talking with the seniors or observing one of our classes. Last week they checked out the Zumba Gold class and couldn’t believe how fit our seniors were. The seniors generally go for an hour while the students were done after joining in for ten minutes. They were surprised to learn that seniors don’t all sit in rocking chairs and play bingo; many are very fit and active. This Thursday at 10:30 a.m., we will be having a ‘Liver Wellness” presentation by the American Liver Foundation. We are talking with Otis Library about having a couple of programs up here. They have a grant that will run out at the end of June which was originally for programs for seniors at the Otis Library but the turnout wasn’t as much as they hoped and they thought if they brought the programs to the Center it would be easier for seniors to attend. We are having our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on May 14th. It will begin at 9:30 a.m. Invitations will be going out soon. On Sunday, April 28th the Lions Club will be having a pancake breakfast. We help co-host this event and they give us a portion of their proceeds. Chairperson’s Report/Legislative Report: None. Old Business: Olive reported that she received a call from Councilman Braddock explaining the procedure to fill the commission’s vacancy but there was some confusion as to whether a charter change would be necessary and whether the replacement would need to be the same affiliation as the former member which would exclude other affiliation and non-affiliated prospects. Mike will find out for sure all the choices and procedures for each and get back to the Commission. New Business: None. Next Meeting: Monday, May 20, 2013, at 9:00 a.m., at the Rose City Senior Center.
