Youth and Family Advisory Board Meeting October 16th, 2018 Time: 8:45 a.m. Attendance Present: Erin Haggan (NYFS), Pat McMahon (Community Member), Judith Post (Community Member), Jodi Savage (NFA), Kerri Sission (Joshua Center), Jamie Miller (Norwich Tech), Angelo Callis (NYFS), Deb Barber (DCF), Gail Palladino-Marsh (CT Juvenile Court), Danielle Marciniak (NHS Intern), Jazmyn Matos (NFA Intern) Excused: Steve Callender (Norwich PD), Tiana Powell (PFS), Christine Goracy (PFS), Sue Dubb (Uncas Health District) Absent: Katelyn Wagner (NPS) Review of September’s Meeting Minutes • Jodi made motion to accept the motion, seconded by Pat – no discussion, motion passed unanimously Old Business • Board Members Month in Review: o Judith: Shared about Global Events initiative by Rotary and an event her church had on Laurel Hill with 13 kids who participated in activities. She shared about the various ways they are reaching out to kids in the community to help focus on character building and also how they reached out to support the community after a fatal shooting that occurred in their neighborhood. o Kerri: Joshua Center is hosting a Trunk or Treat 10/26/18 4-5pm for the youth that attend their programming. Providers are invited to hand out candy and information on the various resources they provide. They will have a mini donkey and it is a peanut free zone. o Jodi: Homeless Night is this Friday 10/19, 11 kids will be making tents and sleeping out to raise money for 4 organizations (TVCCA, Reliance Health, City of Norwich, YETI) There will be speakers and other activities to raise awareness with the students. Considering doing this event as a community based activity next year. o Jamie: Norwich Tech has new administration (Principal and Vice Principal) that just started. o Pat: Passed out flyers for 5K sponsored by Young Marines (Drug Demand Reduction) 10/27 @ 8am at Mohegan Park ($10 to register) o Gail: Reported out on Probation taking over the parole youth due to the Training School closing o Angelo: Reported on the Heroin Task Force presentation to City Council and a new initiative through Ledgelight to hire additional Recover Coaches o Erin: Reported out on JRB and FWSN changes and also that NYFS had started two groups through a grant with Norwich Public Schools (The Council & Voices) and also a Girls Circle & Boys Council group would be starting in the upcoming weeks at IDCS through the Enhancement Grant. • st 21 Century Grant Parent Programming: Requesting ideas for workshops from the Board o Relationship Building o 5 Love Languages (Kerri will follow up with Angelo on presenter) o Importance of giving back through service projects in the community o Social Media and the Impact on Youth and Families o Reliance Health training on warning signs for substance abuse o Strengthening Families (Love & Limits Modules) o Self-Care o Discussing the “Tough Stuff” o Discussed targeting Clinical Day Schools (not through 21st Century Grant) • Board Inventory: o Online Ethics Training: Most members have completed and those who have not were reminded and a separate email sent out to remind them o Elections to occur in November: (Chairperson/Vice Chairperson and Secretary need to be elected) Board members were asked to review the by-laws for responsibilities and contact Angelo with any nominations or interest in positions. New Business • Roberts Rules: Pat provided handouts related to the basics of Roberts Rules, asked Board members to review and contact him with any questions • Review of By-Laws: Last on file that Erin could find were from 2005 – Several Board Members remember updating them since then, Angelo will contact Clerk’s Office to determine if there are more recent ones on file and then will send the most updated ones out to Board Members for review and requests/motions for modifications. • Ideas for “Schwag” giveaways at events: Discussion was tabled due to time constraints o Next Steps:  Angelo will contact Clerk’s Office to determine if there are more recent ones on file and then will send the most updated ones out to Board Members for review and requests/motions for modifications. Norwich Prevention Council • Red Ribbon Week: Subcommittee of Jodi and Pat have been working with students and Superintendent. On Oct 24, students/young marines, Pat, Jodi along with hopefully participation from NPD will go to both middle schools to do a pep rally/educational presentation about Red Ribbon Week, drug demand reduction, the drop box, and promote benefits of drug free lifestyles to the 6th grade classes. Approx 350 kids total between the two schools and a 3—35 minute presentation at each school, to include giveaways which will be dropped off to Jodi at NFA by 10/23. • LPC Grant: Grant offer totaling 7145.00, discussed ideas on continuing suicide prevention efforts to expand to more community or evening events.
