Youth and Family Advisory Board Meeting
November 20th, 2018
Time: 8:45 a.m.
Attendance
Present: Katelyn Wagner (Norwich Public Schools), Pat McMahon (Community Member), Judith Post (Community
Member), Jodi Savage (NFA), Kerri Sission (Joshua Center), Jamie Miller (Norwich Tech), Angelo Callis (NYFS),
Tiana Powell (PFS), Steve Callender (Norwich PD), Deb Barber (DCF), Jazmyn Matos (NFA Intern)
Excused: Erin Haggan (NYFS), Christine Goracy (PFS)
Absent: Gail Palladino-Marsh (CT Juvenile Court), Sue Dubb (Uncas Health District)
Review of October’s Meeting Minutes
• Jodi made motion to accept the motion, seconded by Pat – no discussion, motion passed unanimously.
Old Business
• Board Members Month in Review:
o Angelo: The teen homeless count will begin in January and they are looking for locations to count all
homeless teens in the area via anonymous surveys. Angelo also trained 12 grandparents who are
raising children due to heroin/opioids to use Narcan.
o Tiana: We will be applying for the Drug Free Communities Grant with a focus on marijuana and
vaping. The Partnerships for Success (PFS) grant ends in 2020.
o Steve: Joining Forces will have five Police Officers and students from Uncas Elementary School.
They will continue to go on field trips together and have a community project.
• Board Inventory:
o Online Ethics Training: All members have completed the ethics training. Thank you!
o Elections: Chairperson: Jodi Savage
Vice Chairperson: Pat McMahon
Secretary: Tiana Powell
New Business
• Congratulations to Pat McMahon! He received the Veteran of the Year Award.
• Review of By-Laws: All went unchanged except DCF is not mandatory. The group went over them.
• Staff Changes: Pat Dixe who is the Program Coordinator for youth employment and COOL Directions will
be retiring in January.
Norwich Prevention Council
• Red Ribbon Week: The event was presented to 6th graders and Officer Vega spoke. Next year a run through
with the kids presenting in the event will be beneficial. They would also like to add more education next
year.
• LPC Grant: Grant will continue suicide prevention efforts during suicide prevention week in April. We will
also be starting Youth 2 Youth which is leadership program involved drug and alcohol prevention. We are
partnering with Uncas Health District to bring speaker Jeff Hatch to speak to students and parents. Our
compliance checks will continue with the Norwich Police and SERAC and vaping checks will be added.
