Zoning for minimum off-street parking Summary Memo from Administrator Stewart: The Booard of Trustees (BOT) recently held a workshop with Planning and Zoning Board chairs and village planner Bob Galvin discussing the need to amend the required minimum off street parking in village code. This is in light of the fact that in many cases the village land use boards waive the requirement when, for example, a building owner switches from retail to restaurant on the first floor, resulting, legally, in an increased requirement to provide off street parking when such provision is impossible in practical terms. It is now common practice nationwide for urban areas to abandon these requirements in part or in whole, in favor of more investment in the downtown and in recognition of how parking spaces’ costs can often outweigh their benefits. The BOT of trustees is considering eliminating this off street parking requirement for commercial and retail uses, but retaining it for certain residential uses. The goal of this workshop is to finalize draft amendments to this chapter of the zoning code. More specific proposal to be provided at the meeting and posted on the website.
