For Tuesday, October 22, 2024

Call to order: 10:30 am by Radio Board Chair, Patrick Wendlandt
Roll Call: Present – Darrell Prowse, Rosanna Santoro, Marty Hadfield, Marilyn Ferguson, and
Patrick Wendlandt.
Approval of the October 22, 2024, agenda MSP.
Minutes for September 24, 2024, meeting: Approved. MSP.
Public Comment: 3 members of the public via Zoom and 1 in person. No comments.
Reports:
1. Chair’s Report – Waiting on approval of budget request by City Council.
2. Station Report Managers Report
Butch Larson – A group of radio volunteer staff want to get involved with the fire department’s
Halloween Night at the convention center and have a booth. Looking for volunteers to help with the
concert at the 7th Street Theatre in Hoquiam on 11/9/24. Need a generator and a transfer switch for
the tower location for when the power goes out. Marty and Papa B will be meeting with the City
Council the fourth Tuesday in November to discuss the state of the radio station. Had problems
with Coast Communications going down so that the last City Council Meeting couldn’t be
broadcast. Have a request for a new Hotspot that will operate all computers when the internet goes
down.
3. Technology Report
Marty Hadfield – Discussed the Great Shakeout and the test transmissions that were received by
the radio station from the National Weather Service and other services including the test by Fire
Chief Ritter on the dial in override system that went out over the air at the station and worked very
well. Discussed what would happen if there was a real tsunami warning and what people should do
and where they should go.
4. Council Liaison Report
Denise Siers – Continuing to review multiple budget requests. There is a meeting planned for
Saturday 11/2/24 where the Mayor and Finance committee will present the proposed budget to the
council for discussion.

5. Financials – Sheet supplied by City Clerk, Sara Logan was reviewed by Patrick W.
Discussed discontinuing Beacon Pest Control. Would like a more detailed financial report
that shows both the incoming money as well as the outgoing money.
6. Board Member Report
• Marty Hadfield – Discussed power outage that happened during the Hyak’s football
game and the need for power backup. Stuck with low power backup because the
original KOSW backup is corroded beyond repair and can’t be fixed. The game was
able to be seen on the TV station.
• Darrell Prowse – Butch and Darrell went to the High School PTE presentation to
speak with kids that would be interested in broadcasting or Journalism. Discussed
how the football game was able to be broadcast on the TV station and some of the
issues they went through in the process.
• Rosanna Santoro – Questioned why Kai’s show was called Cup of Joe when DJs
were filling in for her when she was absent.
• Marilyn Ferguson – Nothing
• Patrick Wendlandt – Discussed possibly changing the weekend format for tourists
having more of a beachy vibe from Friday thru Sunday as a welcome to Ocean
Shores with announcements of community events, weather forecasts and tide
reports.
Old Business – Discussed the KOSW survey results.
New Business – None
Discussion – None
Public Communication – Suggested another way of communicating with the public during an
emergency and the power goes out is to send out text messages. Mentioned the city was supposed
to move their equipment out of town in case of an emergency so they can be used when the
emergency is over. Liked having public communication at the beginning and the end of the
meeting.

daily history awesome! Should run that a few times a day so more people hear it! I find the
weird facts hysterical and fun on the morning show. More interesting interviews and bringing
people in that knowledge about our area. Interviewing neighbors that have history here as well
would be cool! Naturist that could be interviewed as well!

DJs and how smart they are in whatever type of programming they have on their show. 3. The
folks that manage KOSW are very dedicated and some have extensive experience in prior
jobs. Very helpful. Thank you for so many really dedicated volunteers. 4. With the new
transmitter, I've checked and there are no dead spots in the city. But coverage is not good in
Hoquiam and Abderdeen. That's not important to me, but just an observation. 5. I've enjoyed
your live coverage of North Beach sports. The DJs that do the games are all very good. 6.

to listen. I am always telling locals about it and its like they have no idea we had a station. I
am curious how DJ get notified of emergency things and how it will be handled on air. I noticed
the last earthquake off the coast of Alaska a few weeks ago nothing was said about it on air
but nothing was said about it until the next day. My app was sending the warning and it was
being talked about online as everyone wanted to stay alert just in case. I know we say KOSW
for emergencies but how isinformation getting to DJs urgently? Also teaching the public how to
get information to KOSW for things that are happening. DJ are not always able to answer
phone when they are on air. Yet sometimes it seems like the public may have urgent
information that maybe helpful. Like when earthquake apps are going off.

listen to the Blues Man Ricky B and on Thur/Fri afternoons. KOSW plays variety like no other
station I have ever listened to. I hear songs that I havent heard in years and may have
forgotten about that were favorites at the time and it brings me back to high school, college
and present, so many great memories in these songs. Your DJ's work hard to bring all this to
the listeners and it is amazing! I don't even mind the commercials and I have never been to
Ocean Shore but I feel like I have as a listener. KOSW is a very special radio station, wish you
could pay the volunteers they deserve it! Keep on Rocking!
