Meeting
• Welcome and Call to Order – Jake McIntire
• Approval of July Minutes
o Motion to approve – Camille Washington
• 2nd motion – Shane O.
• New Poet Laureate Angelika Brewer
o Angelika Brewer presented to the Ogden City Arts Committee about an upcoming project
that is in the works and would like OCAAC to be involved.
o A large mailbox, approximately the size of two regular mailboxes, is in the works of
being built and will act as a type of archive to the community.
o Anyone can place postcards, notes, poetry, artwork, etc. into the mailbox.
o The items that are put into the mailbox could be archived – Brewer would like to work
with the Union Station to act as an archive coming from the people of Ogden.
o Brewer said someone will be painting the mailbox.
o Brewer hopes to place the mailbox at The Corner.
o Jake McIntire brought up the idea of digitizing the items submitted to the mailbox.
Angelika Brewer would like to start a social media account and post one note per
week.
The notes submitted could also be scanned and shares on the screen at the Dumke
Arts Plaza in a slideshow.
o There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony once the mailbox is close to completion.
• Update on the Larger Vision for the Day of the Dead – Amir Jackson
o Amir Jackson shared an update and expressed his gratitude to the committee for the grant
Nurture the Creative Mind received.
o The Día de los Muertos event will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. MST. This is the first time the
event is extending at night. There will also be a car show.
o In the following years, they would like to have a parade in the morning and celebration at
the Union Station.
o Amir Jackson said the goal of hosting this event would be to make Ogden the place to
celebrate Día de los Muertos in Utah.
o OCAAC discussed collaborating with Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music (OFOAM)
because they may also have a Día de los Muertos celebration. Amir Jackson said his
organization’s committee would be open to that conversation.
o Amir Jackson said he and his committee wanted to dedicate a skull to OCAAC and
invited the members to create and design the skull.
o The skulls should be ready for artists to design by September 1st, 2022. They are
allocating three to four weeks for the artists to complete their design on the skull.
o Jake McIntire, Leon Araujo, Stephanie Howerton, and Todd Oberndorfer would like to
help out on this project.
• Mayor’s Awards Nominations (closing August 26, prep for review) – Lorie Buckley
o The nominations are almost over and will close on August 26th.
o Facebook blocked the advertisement of Mayor’s Awards because it included the word
“Mayor."
o Review and voting for nominees will occur on google drive, members will receive the
link via email.
• Discussion of Presentation to City Council – Jake McIntire
o OCAAC is good to present to the City Council and include their report in the Ogden City,
Arts, Culture & Events report.
o The annual process and major five-year review is next year, according to Jake McIntire.
• Update on the Welcome Center Artwork
o Lorie Buckley is still waiting on a repair cost bid for the welcome sign.
o The Ogden Amphitheatre storage room will be the place to keep the smaller items so
Lorie Buckley can keep an eye on them.
o The tiny pieces are currently inside the Welcome Center.
• Discussion About Membership Numbers (Open Seat)
o Franco Cirilo had to step down from their at-large seat.
o There is the option to appoint someone new and could reopen it
o Shane Osguthorpe and Todd Oberndorfer agreed that OCAAC should bring someone else
on the committee.
o New applications will be loaded onto the google drive for review and link will be sent to
committee.
• Open Board Member Seat – OgdenCAN – Jake McIntire
o Ogden Civic Action Network is a nonprofit organization that is an extension of Weber
State University.
o The area of focus is between 20th and 30th and Washington to Harrison.
o OgdenCAN believes art should be represented in their organization’s goals and a major
priority of East Central Ogden.
o OCAAC would act as a conduit as a board member.
o Camille Washington, Kseniya Thomas and Shane Osguthorpe are tentatively interested,
they all live in the neighborhood.
o Whoever becomes the board member for OgdenCAN will be a part of the executive
committee meeting for OCAAC.
o There will be a ballot vote between Kseniya, and Camille sent out to the board – it is not
a formal vote.
• Sub-Committees
• Executive – Jake McIntire
o No new additional pieces
• Nine Rails Creative District – Leon Araujo
• Discussion of how to boost synergy of the subcommittee and Nine Rail Creative
District. Lorie Buckley shared the next meeting will eb Tuesday, Aug. 16 at
Ogden Downtown Alliance discussing wayfinding in districts.
• Literary – Jan Hamer
o Lorie Buckley suggested collecting content to share programming on screen for
Dumke Arts Plaza via an artist call for poets.
• Public Art – Jake McIntire
o OCAAC will do a mural at the Marshall White Center done on panels made for
easy transfer/moving. Waiting for a bit of information from Marshall White
Committee.
o Lorie Buckley updated on The Corner and the public art installation, “The
Ridge.” She is waiting on electrical plan from the engineer. The sculptural
drawings of The Ridge will not be done until December.
Compensation of redesign of “The Ridge” is $16,000 for engineering and
redesign, according to Buckley.
• Arts Grants – Shane Osguthorpe
o Shane Osguthorpe suggested promoting the new grantees on social media like the
new committee members were and sharing their supported projects.
• Public Questions & Attendance
• Jeremy Shinoda is a part of a committee organizing Día de los Muertos at Ben Lomond
High School in collaboration with the school district and Ogden Friends of Acoustic
Music. There will be a concert headliner, food trucks, student artists and a car show.
There will also be a parenting conference that with credit that will go towards the
Community Christmas on Oct. 8th. Shinoda expressed interest in collaborating with Amir
Jackson for Día de los Muertos.
