1. Welcome.
2. Roll Call.
3. Action Item - approval of minutes from 01/12/2021.
a. Commissioner Darby made a motion to approve the minutes. Commissioner
Sawyer seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
4. New Business.
4.1. Current events in the community - Chair Shinoda
a. Commissioner Harbath stated that the Indie Ogden Bazaar is going on at the
Marshall White Center once a month and the next one is on February 20 th from 11-
4 pm.
b. Commissioner Sawyer stated that there is a bill running in legislature session to
make Juneteenth a state holiday so she will be watching that as it goes through
the process.
c. CJ stated that City Council would like to do a joint session in April since they meet
at the same time as the Diversity Commission. This will give the City Council an
opportunity to work closer with the Diversity Commission.
d. Commissioner Bernal stated that Awesome Autistic Ogden is coming up in April
and is in the planning stages currently. The Diversity Commission will have a
table at an event on April 16th at Enable Utah. She would also like Commissioners
to send any questions to her for the community conversation with OPD on the
21st which will be about mental health, disability, and law enforcement.
e. Jeremy will create a document that the commission can tweak with events each
month, possibly a live google doc that commissioners can add what events they
can attend.
4.2. KUER Ogden Listening Tour -
a. gave a presentation on recording sessions that they are creating
that include community partners, donor partners, and internal partners from
KUER. (see recording for full presentation).
4.3. People Helping People Lexie Germaine, Community Outreach Coordinator

a. Lexie Germaine shared a PowerPoint Presentation on the People Helping People
program, which is an employment program to help low-income women and single
mothers reach their full potential in the workplace (see recording for full
presentation).
4.4. Recommendations for City Council Recognitions for February, March and April - Chair
Shinoda
a. Chair Shinoda would like recommendations for recognitions for the next few
months. This can be events, famous people from Ogden, community leaders, etc.
Commissioner Sawyer suggested w
women entrepreneurs in Ogden could be honored or any category such as artists,
non-profits, business leaders, etc. CJ suggested giving the City Council several
names because they meet four times a month so several women could be
recognized. Chair Shinoda suggested it be a rolling list for the entire year.
Commissioner Szalay suggested a list be sent to him so he could get them
photographed and some media coverage. CJ will put all the names in a
spreadsheet with categories that everyone can add to.
4.5. Leadership Nominations - Chair Shinoda
a. Chair Shinoda would like anyone that is willing to chair an existing or new
committee to volunteer for that role due to several people leaving the Commission
due to term limits.
Commission, he is still willing to help with contacts or events. Chair Shinoda would
also like names for a chair and vice-chair for the Commission itself.
b. CJ stated that the current committees are community conversations, outreach,
communication/marketing & event protocol, and race equity & policing.
Commissioner Harbath will chair marketing/event protocol. Commissioner Jones
will chair race equity & policing. Commissioner Bernal suggested combining
community conversations and outreach into one committee. Commissioner Szalay
suggested there be an education committee possibly created.
5. Old Business.
a. Annual report status Chair Shinoda
a. Chair Shinoda would still like people to look at the annual report covering the last
18 months and add whatever he might have forgotten. Chair Shinoda will spend
one more week on it and finalize it to be sent to City Council.
b. Commissioner applications CJ Hernandez
a. CJ stated there are four applications currently in. Please continue to network and
try to get new commissioners. CJ will be out of town for three months starting in
April and Mara, Meggin, and Diana will cover while she is gone.
6. Committee Reports.
a. Commissioner Szalay would like to do more video storytelling to the black
community in Ogden. He would like to do something pertaining to this.
Commissioner Sawyer asked Commissioner Szalay to speak with her and they can
coordinate it.
7. Comments from Staff. (
a. CJ wanted to remind everyone that the Police Awards Banquet is on February 28 th
and the entire Commission has been invited. Please RSVP directly to Diana Lopez.
March 7th is Ogden High School Night where there will be a Commission table set
up. March 8th is when EDC Utah will come to Ogden City and brief senior
management. CJ would like Commissioners to have lunch with them if possible
and she would also like to give them a walking tour of the arts district. April 16 th is
Awesome Autistic Ogden, which the Commission will table at. April 21 st is a
community conversation with OPD about autism and neurodiverse individuals.
February 20th is the bazaar at the Marshall White Center. There are no events for
May yet, so please submit events if you know of anything going on. Juneteenth will
be held in June on the 18th and 19th.
8. Comments from Commission Members.
a. Commissioner Sawyer suggested having someone from Community & Economic
Development attend a meeting and share what they do and any projects going on in
the city.
9. Public comment: This is an opportunity to address the Commission regarding concerns or
ideas on any topic. To be considerate of everyone at this meeting, public comments will
need to be submitted electronically, diversity@ogdencity.com or by calling 801-629-8109.

a. Diana Lopez from Ogden Police Department reported that they are having their
Ogden Community Crime Conference on April 6 th and 7th, formerly known as the
gang conference. There is a fee for the two day conference and if anyone wants to
attend let Diana know.
b. Public Member Oland Thompson stated that he is happy there is a Diversity
Commission for Ogden City and thanked them for their work.
