1. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Hicks called the meeting to order at 6:01 p.m.

The agenda was approved.

18-0705 Approval of July 12, 2018 Arts Commission Minutes
The minutes were approved.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS
Commissioners shared information about past an upcoming art events.
6. BUSINESS ITEMS
18-0741 Percival Plinth Project Peoples’ Choice Award 2018
Ms. Nava shared the results of the public vote for the Peoples Choice Award for the
Percival Plinth Project. Voting closed on July 31. 2511 ballots were distributed, resulting

in 631 votes (up from 499 the previous year). Pig Listening In a Story Place by
Nancy-Thorne Chambers took the lead with 210 votes. Honorable mentions were
Pendant Mandala by Ken Turner with 117 votes, and Old Man of the Sea by Sandra
Hays with 101 votes.
Ms. Nava noted many voters for Pig Listening In a Story Place suggested permanent
placement at the Olympia Timberland Library, given the theme and appeal to children.
Commissioner Goddu suggested talking with the artist about her intention for patina, and
whether the sculpture would need a protective coating to protect from wear/shine from
touching.
Commissioner Goddu moved, seconded by Commissioner Dobler, to forward
the public vote results to Council for approval. The motion passed.
7. REPORTS
18-0706 Policy & Program Recommendation Reports
1.1 Municipal Art Plan to City Council - No report.
1.2 Apply for Creative District Designation - No report.
1.3 Commission Retreat/Work Session - Set for October 11, 4-8 p.m. Topics will include
presentation on downtown pedestrian improvement project, Poet Laureate program
review and planning for the 2019 Work Plan and MAP. Schedule will be developed at the
September meeting.
1.4 ArCH - Commissioners Goddu and Fairbanks, and Vice-Chair Grisham provided
impressions of the July 17 ArCH presentation at Council Study Session.
1.5 Proposal for Arts Organizations Granting Program - Proposal is going to City Council
as a Consent Item on August 21.
1.6 Support the Creative Sector - No report.

18-0707 Arts Program Support Reports
2.1 Arts Walk 56 & 57 - Ms. Nava shared the early version of the Arts Walk WebMap for
the fall event. Commissioners appreciated the various search capabilities the application
offers event goers.
2.2 Music Out Loud - Commissioner Dobler has been in communication with the Olympia
Downtown Association regarding the performers for the August Third Thursday event.
2.3 Public Art Assessment - Complete.
2.4 Arts & Heritage Day at the Capitol - No report.
2.5 Traffic Box Mural Wrap Public Art Project - Ms. Nava noted that installation will begin
this month.
2.6 Percival Plinth Project - Ms. Nava reported Oops!, part of the 2018 exhibition, was
stolen from its location at the Isthmus Park. She noted the sculpture had only one point of
contact with its base, and shared that such minimal support will not be allowed in the
future. Ms. Johnson sharted that Aqueous had been installed in front of City Hall, and
noted the recommended installation location for Growing II at Woodruff Park.

2.7 Poet Laureate - Opportunity is open, closes September 28.
2.8 Implementation of Temporary Display of Art at City Hall & Programming - Opportunity
is open, closes August 29.
2.9 Olympia Art Crossings - Proposal is going to City Council as an Other Business
presentation on August 21.
2.10 Public Art Retrospective - Ms. Nava and Chair Hicks will meet to develop a
preliminary exhibition plan.
The report was received.
