CALL TO ORDER Chair Burlingame called the meeting to order at 6:02 p.m. 1.A ROLL CALL Present: 7 - Chair Jim Burlingame, Vice Chair Kathryn Dorgan, Commissioner Joe Batt, Commissioner Rose Clifthorne, Commissioner Coral Garey, Commissioner Katherine Ransom and Commissioner Tracy Schreiber Absent: 1 - Commissioner Jace Hoag OTHERS PRESENT Armory Building Manager Valerie Roberts Arts Program Specialist Angel Nava 2. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Vice-Chair Dorgan moved, seconded by Commissioner Schreiber, to move File 23-0918 (Approve Slate of Officers for 2024) ahead of Armory Update. The motion passed unanimously. 3. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 23-0906 Approval of October 12, 2023 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes The minutes were approved. 4. PUBLIC COMMENT - None 5. ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioners shared information about past and upcoming arts events. 6. BUSINESS ITEMS City of Olympia Page 1 Arts Commission Meeting Minutes November 9, 2023 23-0908 Approval of 2024 Arts Walk Cover Artists Ms. Nava shared the jury recommendation of David Hoekje as the spring 2024 Arts Walk cover artist and Eileen Bochsler for the fall 2024 cover. The jury was comprised of Arts Walk fall 2023 cover artist Jennifer Kuhns, SPSCC Leonor R. Fuller Gallery Director Sean Barnes, and Arts Commissioner Coral Garey. 18 applications were reviewed. The jury also recommended Julie Kluh and Danny Schreiber as alternates for spring and fall, respectively. Commissioner Garey moved, seconded by Commissioner Batt, to approve the jury's recommendation for the 2024 Arts Walk cover artists. The motion passed unanimously. 23-0907 Armory Update Ms. Roberts provided an overview of the Armory project to date, including receiving a 2023 Washington Governor’s Smart Communities Award, design and construction update and Armory hosting of the Procession of the Species in early 2024. They also provided an update to the Armory Partner selection process and asked for one Commissioner to serve on the selection committee. Chair Burlingame volunteered to serve, as did Commissioner Schreiber, who will serve as alternate. The information was provided. 23-0918 Approve Slate of Officers for 2024 Chair Burlingame noted that Vice-Chair Dorgan expressed interest in serving as Arts Commission Chair for 2024, and Commissioner Hoag has expressed similar interest for the Vice-Chair position. Commissioners spoke in support of the proposed slate of officers. Commissioner Ransom moved, seconded by Commissioner Batt, to approve the slate of officers for 2024 as described. The motion passed unanimously. 7. REPORTS - None 8. OTHER TOPICS Chair Burlingame noted he had set up a meeting with Gulgun Kayim, the new Director of Seattle's Office of Arts & Culture to ask about she envisions her office's role as the center of Seattle's wide-ranging arts community and how Olympia can learn from that. Ms. Johnson shared updates from the Poet Laureate reading and writing workshops and the Grass Lake Public Art Project - deadline November 27. 9.
