BUSINESS ITEM 2.A 16-0967 Briefing on Grant for a Downtown Adaptive Response Unit Fire Chief Larry Dibble discussed a grant from FEMA awarded to the Olympia Fire Department. The grant, called Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER), will provide Olympia's Fire Department with $1.34 million over two years to fund staffing for an Adaptive Response Unit that can respond to lower acuity emergencies that are not time sensitive and primarily occur downtown. The Adaptive Response Unit will lessen the need for fire engines and ladder trucks to respond to these types of emergencies and preserve response times for fire units City wide. The City has until September 14, 2016 to accept this grant from the federal government. Due to Council scheduling, there will not be an opportunity for Council to act on this offer to accept grant funds until September 20, which is after the grant acceptance deadline. Based upon this the Council agreed to add it to the 7:00 p.m. Consent Agenda. Councilmembers asked clarifying questions. The topic was discussed and forwarded to the City Council. 3.
