2. BUSINESS ITEM
2.A 18-0789 Joint Meeting of Elected Officials from City of Olympia, Port of Olympia
and LOTT Clean Water Alliance on Sea Level Rise Response Planning
LOTT Clean Water Alliance Executive Director Michael Strub welcomed attendees and
explained the purpose of the joint meeting. He stated public comment could be provided
this evening on comment cards, during a September 19, 2018 Community Meeting and
through the sea level rise webpage.
Water Resources Director Andy Haub introduced City of Olympia, LOTT Clean Water
Alliance, Port of Olympia and AECOM Technical Services staff involved in the sea level
rise planning project. Mr. Haub presented the project’s goal and challenges. He also
discussed Olympia’s unique circumstances, sea level rise projections and how Olympia’s
shoreline has evolved. Mr. Haub explained the project’s public outreach activities and

next steps.
AECOM Technical Services Coastal Engineer Justin Vandever gave an overview of the
types of sea level rise impacts facing Olympia and the work done to develop and
evaluate potential adaptation strategies. Mr. Vandever presented the potential
adaptation strategies for 24-inches and 68-inches of sea level rise for the project’s five
focus areas: Capitol Lake and Heritage Park; Percival Landing and Isthmus; Port of
Olympia; Combined Sewer System and; Budd Inlet Treatment Plant. He also introduced
preliminary high level costs for the physical strategies which could provide flood
protection for Downtown Olympia.
City Manager Steve Hall stressed Olympia is at the forefront of addressing sea level rise
and suggested it will be important to continue to discuss governance issues, including
how to continue to work together, fund needed projects and incorporate sea level rise into
existing projects.
Councilmembers, LOTT Clean Water Alliance Board members and Port of Olympia
Commission members asked clarifying questions and provided comment.
The information was received.
