BUSINESS ITEMS 5.A 16-0916 Discussion of PBIA Board members and community business owners about the impact of Lakefair Mike Taylor, Owner of Water Street Cafe spoke about his experience with Lakefair. He made the following suggestions on how the event could be handled better: · Allowing local food venues to participate in the event. Currently the company that runs the event “Funtastic” doesn’t allow it. Their website currently says they aren’t accepting new vendors. · Make it a community-based event more like Arts Walk. Vice Chair Phegley received an email from Maureen Oar from the Yoga Loft who suggested: · A deep cleaning of the sidewalk and alleys after the event would be beneficial. · Not closing off the streets so early as it deters from local businesses. · Move the portable restrooms and garbage receptacles to a less invasive (on local businesses) location. Mr. Rentfrow indicated he has been in contact with several business owners and they stated: City of Olympia Page 1 PBIA Advisory Board Meeting Minutes August 11, 2016 · Kevin Stormans Owner of Bayview grocery store has to hire additional security and his business comes to a halt. He is happy the Beer Garden was not located on the isthmus this year. · Owner Ann Buck, Owner of Bucks 5th Avenue has an opinion of streets closures and Funtastic the carnival company. · Other businesses close their doors during the event. · Ryan Kang from the Governor Hotel stated the activity on the hotel is negative. Maureen from the Yoga Loft entered the meeting after her email was shared above. Chair Corso asked her for some solutions on how to make the event positive for everyone: · No parking signs need improvement. The date of the event is too small on the sign and they are placed 10 days before the event so patrons think they cannot park in those locations on non-event days which negatively affect downtown business. Chair Corso indicated there needs to be further discussion with all those affected by the event. The PBIA Advisory Board will discuss a plan to organize a future discussion at their regularly scheduled monthly meeting (that followed this meeting). Maureen from the Yoga Loft complimented the Olympia Police Department for how they managed the event attendees. The discussion was completed. 6. ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m. City of Olympia Page 2
