Recreation Committee Meeting
Wednesday February 7, 2024
6:00 p.m.
Village Hall
100 W. Taft St.
Palmyra, WI.
The meeting was called to order at 6:04 pm by Chairperson Tammie Smith. Roll call: Kinjerski,
Smith, Petruska-present. Also present: Stephanie Butler and Kathy Weiss.
Business
1. Discussion/possible action regarding joint fundraising with the Beautification organization and
general fundraising for 2024 events. Stephanie said that she will be working with the
Beautification group on Party in the Park, Beats at the Beach and View with a Brew events but
she also wants to do her own fundraising events. Possibly different raffles throughout the year,
bags tournaments, etc. She has not gotten any emails from the Beautification group on when their
meetings are, she hasn’t heard from them since last year. Kathy Weiss will let that group know to
get her back on their email list. Committee wants Stephanie to contact Alissa and sit down and
talk about these events just 1 on 1. Stephanie heard from Danielle, the fireworks gal. They want
to charge $2,000 for a 12-15 fireworks show for Party in the Park and there is no way the Rec.
Dept. can afford that. Stephanie will talk with Mr. V, owner of BP about this and see what he
knows and John Kinjerski will see how much the company that does the fireworks for Jefferson
Speedway charges. Clerk Mueller said the biggest thing with any event is that you have to get it
advertised very early and get the word out (flyers) to other communities, put them up in
businesses, etc. If you don’t advertise early, you won’t get a good turnout. Stephanie would like
to maybe use a DJ for Party in the Park instead of a band, not sure yet.
2. Discussion/possible action regarding Recreation Dept. programs/activities. Currently
offered are baseball, softball, T-Ball, coach pitch, fall/spring soccer, flag football, and
men’s basketball. Committee members would like to see some new things offered for
adults. Some things that were discussed were: A Brewer Game day, Trivia night, cards,
bags league, Kayak lessons, yoga, pickle ball league. Angela suggested a survey to
residents to see what they would like but that would involve mailing something out which
is costly, we could do a survey on the website and put flyers around the village asking
residents to respond to village hall if they have any thoughts. They said maybe people
won’t sign up but if we don’t offer things and get the word out no one will ever know we
what have. Stephanie did mention that she is looking into a Facebook page but she said
there is a fee for a business to have a page. She will continue to get more information on
this.
3. Discussion/possible action on beach employees and their duties and beach/swim area. Stephanie
says we need a new “No Fishing” sign ours is old and written on. We need to either get a new
chair for the lifeguards or sand and seal the wood the wood chair that is there because there are
slivers coming off it. And a new umbrella for the chair as well. Dress codes for the lifeguards
were discussed. The Village would purchase a red 1 piece lifeguard suit and if they insist on
wearing a 2 piece suit they must wear red and wear shorts so their bottoms are fully covered and a
top that fully covers them. As of right now Stephanie said she does not have lifeguards,
Committee asked her to advertise and call around to Red Cross and the college. The Committee
would also like the rafts to have ladders put back on them. The kids have done damage in the past
but if we are going to have rafts they need to have ladders and John Kinjerski will talk with the
Police Chief about having Officers stop in at the beach periodically during the day and make
themselves seen, this might help stop some of the vandalism. Kinjerski suggested more lighting
for at night.
4. Discussion/possible action on School gym space use. Stephanie said that now that the Elementary
School is being used for the Montessori school she has lost gym time. She used to be able to get
into the gym at 3:30 pm and now not until 5:30 pm, this is really hurting her programs for
practice time. Angela Petruska said she will reach out the school’s new superintendent and see if
there is anything that can be worked out.
5. Discussion/possible action on the pickle ball court. Stephanie said that currently we have 2 tennis
courts, only 1 net is installed. Do we want to keep one tennis court and add a pickle ball court,
which would require a smaller net? If we do that it would impede on the basketball court that is
there. The Committee said “Yes” to install a pickle ball court. They would also like Stephanie to
try to get a pickle ball league together and see what the interest is and advertise that we have a
pickle ball court so people know about it.
Tammie Smith asked Stephanie to email the Committee after she has talked to Alissa Simmons.
We will try to have another committee meeting in a few weeks for updates.
Petruska/Kinjerski motion to adjourn at 7:36 pm. All ayes-motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Laurie Mueller,
Village Clerk/Treasurer
