MAYOR’S UPDATE Mayor Hector C. Lora updated the council and residents on the following: Passaic City Council October 19, 2021 Minutes PUBLIC MEETING OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PASSAIC WAS CONDUCTED AS A LIVE STREAM VIA FACEBOOK • COVID statistics from March 2020 to date: • 9128 tested positive for Covid-19; of those there were 309 deaths; no deaths since June 2021. • Silver seniors program held memorial and lit candles to honor legacy and memory of those Passaic resident who passed from covid-19 • Free Covid testing and vaccines are available every Wednesday from 10am-2pm at WIC, 333 Passaic Street. • Over 86% of adults over 18 and over have been vaccinated. • 75% of residents under the age of 18 have been vaccinated. • Water and food distribution continues on Wednesdays from 3pm at Dignity House (270 Broad), at 1222 8th Street, and at City Hall. • 14 new police recruits have been sworn in this week. • Passaic was awarded over $200,000 in the Justice Assisted Grant (JAG). Paterson and Clifton were also awarded JAG grants. • Summer, Terhune, South and Federal Streets were among those paved this past week. • New traffic lights were installed at Howe Avenues. • Blinking stop signs installed at Aycrigg. • Mayor Lora, along with Assemblyman Schaer and other department heads, Business Administrator, Commissioner of board of education Ronald Van Rensalier, Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh, Paterson council and Paterson Board of Education members were among those in attendance in Paterson to dedicate the Freedom Bell in recognition of Rensalier and Huntoon families who worked with the Underground Railroad to ensure freedom from slavery. • Mount Pilgrim missionary Baptist church to recognize and honor Dr. Reverend McDowell. Upon motion made by Council Member Melo and seconded by Council Member Garcia the aforementioned meeting minutes were approved. The Council opens every public meeting for comments of the public. However, in accordance with N.J.S.A. 10:4-12 “nothing in this Act shall be construed to limit the discretion of a public body to permit, prohibit or regulate the active participation at any meeting,” Therefore, the City Council will not entertain any comments from persons who communicate obscene material, make statements which are considered bias intimidation in which any person attempts to intimidate any individual or group because of race, color, religion, handicap, sexual orientation, or ethnicity or makes personally offensive or abusive, defamatory or profane comments, comments intending to harass or speak any offensive or abusive language. The person who makes these statements will relinquish their allotted five minutes for public discussion. Abraham, realtor • He expressed appreciation to Jackie Cruz, Alvin Martinez and Louise Irizarry from housing and fire departments for facilitating certificate of occupancy and fire inspections. • Concerns about cars running red lights at Paulson and Passaic avenues; and speeding on Aycrigg avenue. Esh Levy, 285 Aycrigg Avenue • She believes they have mice in their apartment because of 208 Passaic Avenue. • She witnessed an accident on Passaic avenue; she called the police to report; she has concerns for children walking home from school. Alice Einhorn, 285 Aycrigg • She is proud of Passaic’s handling of the pandemic and thanked the mayor and the council for their efforts. • Regarding the tragedy at the brook during Storm Ida, what measures are being taken for future?
