Regular Meeting of the Commission on Aging
Held at the Recreation and Aquatics Center
Thursday, March 16, 2023 – 12:00 p.m.
In Person - Via Go-To-Meeting
Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Section 10-15-1 through 10-
15-4 NMSA and Resolution 23-01.
ROLL CALL
The meeting convened at 12:02 with Chair Wakefield presiding, members: East, Price, Hellums,
and Councilor Perry being present.
Absent: Brooke Stephens
Staff present: Colette Hall
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Member East motioned to approve the March 16, 2023, Commission on Aging agenda. Member Prince
was the second. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed 4-0.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1. Member East motioned to approve the Commission on Aging minutes from January
19, 2023. Member Hellums was the second. A voice vote was unanimous and the
motion passed 4-0, with Member Stephens being absent.

Member Stephens joined in via phone due to GoToMeeting connectivity issues at 12:20 p.m.
ACTION ITEMS
2. Discuss and recommend topics for Senior Tips Flyer.
May - theme Older American’s Month and the tie to Roswell per Chair Wakefield
who will send the information. Emphasis placed on seniors getting out and moving.
Member Hellums will provide information about the walking group led by Dr.
Martinez. June - themed to convey getting out, meet others and socialize. The flyer
will list other places that seniors can gather to meet. Member Hellums motioned to
approve the topics and Member East was the second. A voice vote was unanimous
and the motion passed 5-0 with Member Stephens participating via telephone.
NON-ACTION ITEMS
3. Newly appointed Commissioners.
New Commissions were introduced and welcomed by Chair Wakefield.
4. Moving COA meetings to Senior Circle location ENMMC.
Discussion to move the meetings to Senior Circle was favorable pending
confirmation that the Commission can be accommodated at the location. Also
discussed was the option to hold at different locations.
5. Senior Day- City of Roswell officially create and implement.
Discussion as to what the Roswell Senior Day should entail including nominating an
outstanding senior and activities for a weeklong event. It was asked that a
proclamation by the mayor be sought by city staff and staff to discuss with Public
Affairs.
6. New Chair position available.
Chair Wakefield resigned as being chair and there was discussion about chair and
vice chair positions.
CHAIR ANNOUNCEMENTS/REPORTS
Chair Wakefield made the following comments/announcements:
Chair Wakefield has concerns about those seniors that need help dealing with their HOA’s when
issues arise. Chair Wakefield informed all about Eastern New Mexico University’s project C-3PO
providing computer literacy and training for seniors at no charge. Discussion was held about the
importance of these trainings for seniors.
Discussion was held to meet in April to approve the May and June Senior Tips flyer.
