MEETING MINUTES
JULY 29,2013
Commission Members Present: Bob Edwards, Mandy Owens, Dwain Brown,
Jane Ann Oldrup, Jim Waldrip
Others Present: Elaine Mayfield, Jared Kallunki,
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm at the Parks and Recreation office. Jane Ann
approved the agenda Mandy seconded. No previous minutes. Minutes were taken by
Elaine Mayfield.
Number five on the agenda: Fencing at Stiles Field. Fence is up but not wide enough.
Will be reassessing the fencing needs. Parks painted over confusing arrows on the bike
trail, put up by Sr. Olympics, ie "10K" was painted on the trail surface. Jane Ann
remarked on the lack of use of the horseshoe courts.
Number six on the agenda: Report on Directors Search. The first guy they interviewed
declined the position and went to Ruidoso. The second guy asked for an extension and
then turned down the position. They are now going to re-open the position.
Number seven on the agenda. Staff Reports. A). Update on Stiles Field- Fencing &
Parking. James reported he is satisfied. B). Girls Soccer Complex. The Women's
softball league had a tournament; the field needs more work but went well. Bob said
there were trailers/campers parked on dirt area inside the fence. Also kids hitting fence
with balls; need signs saying "no pepper", also need better wording on "play only" sign.
Elaine said there were lots of people from the tournament that went to the Zoo. C).
Alcohol Permit for City. The Committee asked the Commission to consider and make
recommended action. This entails a liquor license for the City to use at facilities and
ballpark events. Bob suggested members attend the next Committee meeting, Monday,
August 5, 2013 at 5:30pm to find out what this entails. Jared read regulations on
government liquor license, Statute 60-6A-IO. D). Sound System for Parks and
Recreation. The P & R Committee is suggesting the City buy a sound system for events
instead of renting one each time. Bob said this may be something for new director to
direct. Dwain moved we make recommendation for sound system to be moved to
Recreation Committee to begin researching costs on suitable sound system. Mandy
seconded; it was approved. E). Signage for Nancy Lopez Golf Course. The Committee
asked for action on new entry signs at Nancy Lopez Golf Course. There was a discussion
of costs. James said he remembers that it was said "at no cost to City", and that the
Hispano Chamber and Steve Smith might contribute. James moved the committee
recommended the City pursue outside donations or state and federal grants to pay for
sign and to get bids on costs. Dwain seconded; it was approved.
Number eight on the agenda: Unfinished business. Jim said the superintendent Mr.
Burris, asked him to work with the Planetarium as the director has been ill and won't be
back for a while. He gave a brief history on the Planetarium built in 1968 by Don
Anderson. Jim gave four shows during the UFO Festival July 5th and 6th and had 497
attendees. Jim Waldrip was director of the Planetarium for the first 25 years.
Number nine on the agenda: New Business. James said East Side Little League want to
take over the field at Melendez Park so they can maintain it as other leagues have their
own field that they maintain. Bob said we can put it on the next month agenda and invite
representatives.
The next meeting date is August 26, 2013. Jane Ann made the motion to adjourn. Mandy
seconded; motion was approved.
