Update on Dog Park: Bob visited the Dog Park and interviewed 5 different dog owners and they
requested a leach line, drain, pad or more gravel put around the drinking fountain because it creates
mud; and they asked for a bench inside and a another dog bag station. Bob said he has $500 to use for
another dog station. Elaine said the benches were on order. Bob asked Ken about the grass over there
under construction, Ken said he had 9 extra rolls of sod from another project and he laid it there.
Dedication on new Missouri Ave. Park: Lots of progress, grass is down and it’s looking good. The sign
will say established in 1933. Ken saved some lime stone from the original park and has a mason giving
him a quote to put lime stone pillars around the upright for the pavilion to bring back the native
material to the park. Elaine mentioned Altrusa is interested in adopting the park and donating some
money to get it named after them. They have only the small amount of $6,000. Elaine told them to fill
out the paper work and bring it to the commission. Altrusa wants a couple benches with their name on
them. A date of May 8, 2014 around 1:30 PM was discussed for a grand opening. Elaine will contact the
principle and get her/his input on it.
Discussion of Eastside Little League and Melendez Park: James said they play in the Jr’s league and it is
played at Lions Hondo. He said their fee was really high. The agreement between the Leagues was that
there was supposed to be 2 umpires for each game and each player paid an additional registration fee to
cover that. Eastside paid $600-$700 to play on the Jr league at Lions Hondo and there was only 1
umpire and sometimes there weren’t any umpires. They didn’t refund any of the money and then
canceled out the last two weeks of the season so the kids didn’t get to finish their season. If Eastside
had their own park they could invite teams to play at Melendez Park. Melendez Park would need in
fields, some bleachers’ and some fencing. Dusty asked Ken to get some prices for fencing and he would
get with the Sertoma Club for funding.
Unfinished Business: Great strides on the Planetarium. There should be a release for a job description
coming out for a Director.
New Business: None
Consider and Set Next Meeting: February 24th, 2014 at 6:00 PM.
Meeting adjourned: Meeting adjourned at 6:55 PM.
