Regular Meeting of the Public Safety Committee
Held in the Conference Room at City Hall
May 26, 2015
Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Sections 10-15-1 through 10-
15-4 NMSA 1978 and Resolution 14-36.
ROLL CALL
The meeting convened at 3:08 p.m. with Chair Denny presiding, Councilors Sandoval and
Sanchez present; Councilor Velasquez was absent.
Staff present: Jason Sweatfield, Bill Bartlett, Karen Sanders, Mike Mathews, Eric Mann, Devin
Graham, Warren Aldrich, Sharon Coll, Loretta Juarez, Brad McFadin and Phil Smith.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Councilor Sandoval moved to approve the May 26, 2015 regular Public Safety Committee
Meeting Agenda as presented. Councilor Sanchez was the second. A voice vote was unanimous
and the motion passed; Councilor Velasquez was absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Councilor Sandoval moved to approve the April 13, 2015 minutes for the former Police Committee.
Councilor Sanchez was the second. A voice vote was unanimous and the motion passed; Councilor
Velasquez was absent.
Councilor Denny stated the regular Public Safety meetings will be held the last Monday of every
month at 3:00 p.m.
NON-ACTION ITEMS
Police Department Report
Chief Smith discussed the statistics and numbers for the Police Department and Animal Control
for the month of May 2015. Events for May include the Community Investment Program, Hike It
& Spike It and the budget process. Deputy Chief McFadin briefly mentioned the animal control
system for the public to go online and view current status of animals in and out of the facility is
installed and will be ready to view by the end of the week.
Fire Department Report
Interim Chief Graham gave an update on the Fire Department. He introduced the new Fire
Marshall, Warren Aldrich. Interim Chief Graham discussed the statistics for the department. A
few events for May include training with County Departments, Explorer Program and Hike It &
Spike It.
Code Enforcement Report
Bill Bartlett discussed the Community Investment Program, weed notices, demolished
structures and the Clean and Safe Free Tipping Fee Program. Mike Mathews briefly mentioned
the community service program has had plenty community service workers to clean up alleys.
Emergency Management Report
Karen Sanders gave an update on Emergency Management. Events for the month of May
include outdoor warning siren testing, NMMI multi-agency active shooter drill, FEMA final
inspection Urton/Mescalero bridge, completion of Mitigation Grant paperwork for five sirens
for Dexter and Hagerman, NMDHSEM reviewing the updated Emergency Operations Plan,
completion of the repeater installation on Pinon tower, progress on current SHSGP grant and
review of Mass Notification System Demos.
