Printed and posted: October 11, 2018  ROSWELL MUSEUM AND ART CENTER MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Monday, September 24, 2018 DRAFT DOCUMENT REGULAR MEETING AT 4:00 p.m. CALL TO ORDER Chair Cymantha Liakos called the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:01 p.m. ROLL CALL The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with Chair Cymantha Liakos and members Jamie Barnes, Donovan Fulkerson, Peggy Krantz, Priscilla Ornelas, Nanette Schumacher, Bill Siders, and De Angela Velasquez being present. A quorum was established with members Anne Baker, Jessica Parham, Lorrina Segovia being absent. Staff present: Caroline Brooks; Executive Director, Amberly Meli; Registrar, Cydney Fulks; Communications and Events Coordinator, and Cindy Torrez; Executive Director, RMAC Foundation. Community members present: none C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Krantz motioned to approve the agenda. Member Schumacher seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed, with members Baker, Segovia, and Parham being absent. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Member Velasquez motioned to approve the minutes for the August 20, 2018, and August 30, 2018, board meeting. Member Barnes seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed, with members Baker, Parham, Segovia being absent. E. DISCUSS AND CONSIDER APPROVAL OF NEXT STEPS TO UPDATE THE MISSION STATEMENT Director Brooks presented the current mission statement and the proposed new mission statement. Member Krantz suggested we adopt the proposed mission statement. Member Krantz motioned to approve the proposed new mission statement. Member Schumacher seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed, with members Baker, Segovia, and Parham being absent. F. UPDATE – NAVAJO BLANKET DONATION Director Brooks explained the museum is working on gathering more information about the background of the Navajo blanket as well as getting details about the cost to clean and preserve the piece. G. UPDATE – MEMBERSHIP/EVENT REPORT Communications and Events Coordinator Fulks presented the membership report. H. CYDNEY FULKS DEPARTURE ANNOUNCEMENT Fulks announced her departure. N. DIRECTOR’S REPORT The Roswell Science and Art Festival will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Museum and on 11th Street. This free for all-ages event will present a fun-filled day of science and art opportunities including hands-on projects, interactive demonstrations, stage presentations, brief “mini” lectures, a fractal show, short science-inspired films, and a student gallery. The aim of the event is to engage our community in art and science and to inspire the next generation of creative and innovative thinkers. The main features of the festival include:  Outdoor Science Museum: This area will include about 15 booths that represent a variety of science, cultural, and educational groups who will present interactive demonstrations.  Make Lab: Area to experiment and do hands-on activities/experiments. Approximately 20 project stations.  Mini-Talks: The Mini-Talks will be limited to 10 minutes each and will present innovative ideas and projects in the sciences and/or art field that educate and inspire.  Main Stage: To feature University of Texas Professor “Kate the Chemist,” as well as Science Spectrum presentations and a performance by acrobats from Wise Fool New Mexico.  Student Gallery: A display area for Rube Goldberg Machines created by area middle school students for the festival. 2. Staffing Aubrey Hobart, PhD will be joining the Museum’s staff as Curator of Exhibitions and Collections on October 15, 2018. Aubrey recently graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a PhD in Visual Studies. Her main area of expertise is the display of Colonial Latin American art in U.S. museums, but she has wide-ranging interests in Pre-Columbian and contemporary art, the history of the American southwest, and the sciences. She has an extensive background as an educator, strategic planner and curator, and is looking forward to focusing her energies on the Roswell Museum and its communities. Aubrey is originally from Denver, Colorado. Cydney Fulks will sadly be leaving the museum as she has accepted a position in the nursing home field. Her last day will be October 2, 2018. We are in the process of hiring a new Preparator to replace Brandon Strange who left in August and are awaiting the reposting of a Guest Services position. 3. Interns Two interns are currently working at the Museum. Sojourner (Journey) McCaskey, is working with Amanda Nicholson in the Education Department as a part-time intern through October. Journey is a Roswell native with future career plans of going into the education field. Maranda Stone, a student in the graphic design program at ENMU-R, is interning as part of a practicum class. She is assisting with various design projects including a re-design of a brochure to accompany the Robert H. Goddard collection and gallery wayfinding signage. 4. Summer Planetarium Shows We presented an expanded schedule of planetarium shows from June 12, 2018 through August 31, 2018 (Tuesdays at 7:00 p.m. and Wednesday through Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.). Attendance was 1,557 with an additional 944 attending the laser shows during the UFO Festival. The laser shows had an average attendance (usually around 900-1,000). We don’t have comparables for the summer shows, however, we averaged 32 people per day. 5. pARTy After Hours The Museum presented its third pARTy After Hours on Friday, August 24, 2018. We had 298 attendees and the event, which had a science theme, was very well received. Activities included a DJ and mad scientist photo booth presented by 5 Star DJ. Miranda Howe facilitated an egg tempera exercise inspired by the Magical and Real exhibition, Explora from Albuquerque brought several activities, Toddzilla catered, and the staff presented a science trivia game in the courtyard (similar to bar trivia). The Kids’ Zone hosted 40 kids while their parents enjoyed the event. O. RMAC FOUNDATION REPORT Executive Director Torrez explained the foundation will send out the annual appeal letter in October. P.
