CALL TO ORDER Chair Cymantha Liakos called the meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:02 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Donovan Fulkerson, Bill Siders, Peggy Krantz, Priscilla Ornelas, Jamie Barnes, Anne Baker, Kay Cargill Jenkins, and Valli West being present. A quorum was established with members Jessica Parham, and Lorrina Segovia being absent. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director; Wendy Cook, Communications and Events Coordinator; Aubrey Hobart, Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, and Amberly Meli, Registrar Community members present: Larry Connelly C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Cargill Jenkins motioned to approve the agenda. Member Krantz seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Parham and Segovia being absent. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Member Siders motioned to approve the minutes for the July 15, 2019, board meeting. Member Ornelas seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with Parham and Segovia being absent. E. DISCUSS AND CONSIDER APPROVAL OF HO BARON GIFT/DONATION Curator Hobart and Registrar Meli shared background information of El Paso artist Ho Baron who has offered several works to RMAC. The BOT collections working group has reviewed the offer and selected four pieces for acquisition; “Doppelganger Bust”, “Post Nuclear Dog”, “Committee Relief” and “The Distortionists”. At the recommendation of Curator Hobart and the collections working group, member Baker motioned to accept the four pieces into the permanent collection. Member Siders seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Parham and Segovia being absent. F. DISCUSS AND CONSIDER APROVAL OF JEANIE WEIFFENBACH GIFT/DONATION Curator Hobart and Registrar Meli shared that Jeanie Weiffenbach has approached RMAC with several possible art donations, however, few of the artists are connected to the Southwest. The collections working group has reviewed the works offered and selected one Southwest piece by artist Wesley Rusnell titled “Red Arches, Yellow Sky.” RMAC already holds a few Rusnell works in the permanent collection and the acquisition fits nicely with the other works. At the recommendation of Curator Hobart and the collections working group, member Baker motioned to accept the four pieces into the permanent collection. Member West seconded. A voice vote was unanimous, and the motion passed with members Parham and Segovia being absent. G. MEMBERSHIP/ATTENDANCE REPORT Director Brooks reviewed the July membership and attendance report. H. DIRECTORS REPORT Director’s Report to the RMAC Board of Trustees August 19, 2019 Board Meeting Submitted by: Caroline Brooks, Executive Director 1. Fire Alarm System Updates Updates to the fire alarm system will take place beginning this month. 2. Community Forum The Museum participated in a Community Forum on Thursday, August 15 at the Roswell Adult Center along with Parks and Recreation and the Library to promote our current offerings and answer questions from the community. This is a monthly series presented by the City Manager on a variety of community-related topics. 3. Membership Letters Letters on the updated membership rates and guidelines went out last month to pre-existing members at the $100 and lower levels. A collaborative letter created with the Foundation will be distributed shortly to our higher-level members. Temporary paper membership cards, with the NARM logo for $100 for Enthusiast level members, were included in the mailing and permanent cards will be produced once the card printer is available. 4. Lobby Improvements Lobby improvements were finished recently, which include painting, new signage, a video display and an intro wall with the history of the Museum. The greeter table was also removed and the greeter program has concluded to allow visitors to more readily speak to Guest Services staff when entering the Museum. Thanks go to David and Ronnie, our last greeters, for their commitment and support. 5. Fall Guide Similar to the Summer Guide that listed classes, events and recreation opportunities offered by City departments this past summer, the City is producing a fall guide, which should be out by late August. It will be an insert in the Roswell Daily Record and available at several public locations. 6. July Happenings Follow-Up The Global Launch Day on July 16 was well-attended with about 30 participants and helped kick off Space Camp. To close out the moon-landing anniversary, we hosted a movie under the stars on July 20 with the film Space Camp, Moon gazing with the Astronomy Club and some hands-on activities. About 65 people were in attendance and it was a fun location (behind the Museum) and experience that we might consider again in the future. Wendy represented the Museum during the Chaves County Health Fair on Saturday, August 3 and was able to distribute cards announcing Family After Hours and the Science and Art Festival. 7. Upcoming Exhibitions Decades: The 1930s and 1940s is currently being installed and opens on August 23. The exhibition, which showcases artwork from the permanent collection created in those decades, is part of a series that will continue throughout the next couple of years and will examine some of the influences that inspired artwork of  those eras. The next Artist-in-Residence exhibition will be for Erica Bailey and opens on September 20. Her exquisitely crafted video and diorama installations will examine humanities’ past and future. 8. August Events pARTy After Hours is fast-approaching on Friday, August 23 from 6 to 9 pm and a Family After Hours will be presented August 29 from 5 to 8 pm in partnership with RISD’s Arts Connect Program. The theme for the pARTy is “Swing Into the 40s” based on the upcoming Decades exhibition. The theme for the family night is “Fields of Color” in connection with the Coloring Inside the Lines exhibition which is already on display. Both are supported by the RMAC Foundation and volunteers are welcome at each. 9. Virtue of Ownership – September 7 On September 7 we will be presenting the second of two panel discussions connected to The Virtue of Ownership exhibition presented in partnership with the African American Museum and Cultural Center of New Mexico. The topic will be school segregation, its effects on social interactions with other ethnic groups in the community, and how segregated schools interacted with other school communities. 10. Roswell Science and Art Festival Plans are continuing for the second annual science and art festival, which will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Roswell Convention Center. New presenting partners this year are Keep Roswell Beautiful, which will aid in creating a mural made of plastic bottle caps (please start saving yours from milk jugs, soda and water bottles), and the Roswell Public Library who will present story times for our younger attendees. 11. Staff Leave Curator of Education Amanda Nicholson has returned from FMLA. I. RMAC FOUNDATION REPORT None. RMAC Foundation Director Torrez on vacation. I. CHAIR’S REMARKS AND BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS None J. PUBLIC COMMENT Larry Connelly congratulated RMAC for the exceptional attendance at the first Family After Hours event in May. He was at the convention center for the city council meeting and enjoyed seeing the many families entering the museum. K. ADJOURN Member Krantz motioned to adjourn. Member Cargill Jenkins seconded. Fire Alarm System Updates Updates to the fire alarm system will continue through the next several months with an estimated completion by the end of November. 13. Christopher Baldwin A Gratton workshop will take place on September 28-29 on the topic “Creating Comics About Your Life” led by Christopher Baldwin. Gratton Workshops are open to paying students and those with a financial need. We ask that students pay what they can afford up to the suggested donation of $125. Supplies are included with fee. Bottle Caps Please collect plastic bottle caps and lids to contribute to a recycled art mural depicting Capitan Mountain that will be assembled during the science and art festival. They need to be clean and may be dropped off until October 7 to the Museum. 15. Science and Art Festival The second annual science and art festival will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Roswell Convention Center. Recent additions to the festival is the Department of Cultural Affairs Wheels of Wonder mobile museum with an exhibit showcasing the anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, the Roswell Fire Department with its Fire Obstacle Course, and two sessions of Family Yoga with Michelle Matthews. Volunteer opportunities are available. 16. August Event Follow-Up pARTy After Hours took place on Friday, August 23 from 6 to 9 pm with an attendance of 140. Family After Hours was presented on August 29 from 5 to 8 pm in partnership with RISD’s Arts Connect Program with an attendance of 436. The theme for the pARTy was “Swing Into the 40s” based on the Decades: The 1930s and 1940s exhibition. The theme for the family night was “Fields of Color” in connection with the Coloring Inside the Lines exhibition. Both were supported by the RMAC Foundation. 17. Virtue of Ownership Panel We hosted the second of two panel discussions connected to The Virtue of Ownership exhibition on September 7. The in-person attendance was not as high as expected, however there were 56 viewers online and the video is available on Facebook. The topic was school segregation, its effects on social interactions in the community, and how segregated schools interacted with other school communities. The  event was organized by the African American Museum and Cultural Center. 18. Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions Decades: The 1930s and 1940s opened on August 23. The exhibition, which showcases artwork from the permanent collection created in those decades, is part of a series that will continue throughout the next couple of years and will examine some of the influences that inspired artwork of those eras. The next Artist-in-Residence exhibition will be for Erica Bailey and opens on September 20 with a lecture and reception from 5:30-7pm. Her exquisitely crafted video and diorama installations will examine humanities’ past and future. On October 25 from 5-7 pm, an exhibition by ceramic/mixed media artist Sharbani Das Gupta title In/Site will open with a reception. She uses her work to draw attention to the not-so-hidden, but often disregarded, links between ourselves and the worlds we inhabit and impact. On November 8 from 5-7 pm, the museum will open A Line in the Sand: Wildlife of the Borderlands, and exhibition co-curated by biologists Tracy Diver and Alexis Harrison and organized by Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Aubrey Hobart. The exhibition explores the stories of animals living along the border, from the observations of early explorers to contemporary artistic representations of these same species. This event is part of the Species in Peril Along the Rio Grande regional collaboration organized by 516 Arts in Albuquerque. For more information visit 516arts.org.
