Richardson Ave. Roswell, NM 88201 DRAFT DOCUMENT REGULAR MEETING AT 4:00 p.m. Notice of this meeting was given to the public in compliance with Sections 10-15-1 through 10-15-4, NMSA 1978 and Resolution 24-23. For the Record: Meeting is being streamed live for the public through GoToMeeting. There was no public on GoTo Meeting. A. CALL TO ORDER Board Chair West called the meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 4:06 p.m. B. ROLL CALL The meeting of the Board of Trustees convened with members Lindsay Mayo Fincher, Valli West, Anne Baker, Tim Hartwick, and Nina Leacock present. A quorum was established with members Kay Cargill Jenkins, Jane Avery Gray, Elisa Begueria, and Lorrina Segovia being absent. City Council members present: The museum has not been appointed a city council liaison with the new council members. Staff present: Caroline Brooks, Director, Aaron Wilder, Curator, and Cloe Medrano, Registrar Community members present: None. ACTION ITEMS C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Member Fincher motioned to approve the agenda. Member Baker was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 5-0, with members Jenkins, Gray, Begueria, and Segovia being absent. D. Approval of the April 15, 2024 meeting minutes Member Fincher motioned to approve the April 15, 2024. Member Baker was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 5-0, with members Jenkins, Gray, Begueria, and Segovia being absent. E. Discussion and consider approval of board of trustee applicant Member Baker motioned to approve the nomination of Christy Murphy. Member Leacock was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 5-0, with members Jenkins, Gray, Begueria, and Segovia being absent. Discussion and consider approval of board officer appointments Member Leacock motioned to approve member West staying as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Member Fincher was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 7-0, with members Begueria, and Segovia being absent. Member Leacock motioned to approve member Baker staying as the Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees. Discussion and consider approval of cancellation of June board meeting due to availability levels Member Baker motioned to approve the cancellation of June board meeting. Member Fincher was the second. A voice vote was unanimous, the motion passed 7-0, with members Begueria, and Segovia being absent. INFORMATION ONLY ITEMS H. Renovation Progress Update During construction of the new museum store and updates to the lobby, the main entrance to the museum will be closed. During this time, a temporary entrance will be in use at the planetarium. Asbestos abatement is taking place the last two weeks of May on the north side of the facility near the courtyard and in one gallery. The abatement is removing asbestos containing glue that previously adhered tiles that were in use until about the 1980s. After which epoxy terrazzo will be installed in this area and the new lobby and store. I. Governance Working Group Report The members have found some potential candidates and are sending them more information about being on the board. J. Director’s Report Director Brooks informed the board the first of two recent MFA graduate exhibitions, Dominick Porras: Silvery Synthesis, will open with an artist talk and reception on Friday, June 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Two free family-friendly films will be shown this summer, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs on June 21, and Zathura: A Space Adventure on July 26 outside the planetarium. Games and activities will be available at 8 pm and the movies will begin at dusk. Registration has begun for kid’s clay and drawing and painting classes. K. RMAC Foundation Report No comment. L. The meeting adjourned at 5:07 p.m. Board of Trustees Meeting 6/17/2024 Acquisition Approval: Gift of Eluid Levi Martinez Artwork Donation Details & Justification: This gift of one work by Eluid Levi Martinez is an excellent compliment to work by this artist already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 1. Eluid Levi Martinez, Ojo de la Cruz-Azul (Eye of the Cross-Blue), 1990, Lithograph on Paper; Image: 14.875×9.75”, Sheet: 18×13.875 Eluid Levi Martinez was born in 1944 in the Hispanic Northern New Mexico mountain village of Cordova. He is a member of the famous Lopez wood carving family from that village, a family which has produced Santos for 7 generations. A self-taught artist he began to carve Santos in the late 1960s… In the early 1990s he produced lithographs at the Tamarind… Institute… Since the early 1970s Eluid's Santo sculptures have been part of numerous museum exhibitions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum's 2001 touring exhibition "Treasures of American Folk Art". External Source: https://eluidlevimartinezart.com/ 1 This gift of one lithograph by Martinez is an excellent compliment to the one sculpture by this artist that is already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 2 Board of Trustees Meeting 6/17/2024 Acquisition Approval: Gift of Signe Stuart Artwork Donation Details & Justification: This gift of 1 work by Raymond Jonson is an excellent compliment to works by this artist already in the Roswell Museum’s collection. 1. Raymond Jonson, Dramatic Forms #1, March 26, 1936, Charcoal on Paper, 18x22" (plus mat and Jonson frame), Signed by Raymond on the reverse, Artist gave work to Signe Stuart in 1969 or 1970 Raymond Jonson (1891-1982) was born in Iowa and moved often during his childhood. His art training began at the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum School and continued after his 1910 move to Chicago at the Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute. Encouraged by his teacher B.J.O. Norfeldt, Jonson became art director at the Chicago Little Theatre. His experimental stage design work and Bauhaus concepts influenced his painting, which took on distinctly abstract qualities in the twenties. A 1922 summer visit to Santa Fe prompted Jonson's permanent move to New Mexico two years later. For twenty five years, he taught and painted in Santa Fe, producing rhythmic, sculpturally modeled landscapes, suggestive of a life force underlying the land. In the late thirties, he experimented with airbrush, collage, and spatter techniques. Jonson continued to work in an abstract mode after joining the University of New Mexico faculty in 1949.
