ROSWELL PUBLIC LIBRARY
BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETING
4:00 p.m. January 23, 2014 Bondurant Room
MEMBERS
PRESENT: Marna Hunt, Patti Bristol, Linda Madrid, Magil Duran, Judy
Armstrong, Ed David, and Elizabeth Shamas
MEMBERS
ABSENT: None
OTHERS
PRESENT: Betty Long, Library Director, Savino Sanchez, City Council Liaison, and
Kay Carrasco, Recording Secretary.
CALL TO
ORDER: Marna Hunt, President, called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Members
present were noted, proper quorum was met.
MINUTES: President Hunt asked if there were any corrections or additions to the
minutes of the previous meeting; there was one, a mis-spelled name.
Magil Duran moved to approve the October 24, 2013 minutes as
corrected, Patti Bristol seconded, and the motion passed.
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT: In addition to her written report Betty Long, Library Director, gave an
update on the building repairs, which are just finishing up, including the
interior painting. Ms. Long met with a mechanical engineer in a consultation
concerning our HVAC control valves, which are obsolete and which
Johnson Controls is no longer covering under our maintenance policy. The
replacement costs are about $72,000, so the City is looking into alternatives
to replacement. The engineer will provide a report and recommendation.
The Johnson Controls contract expires in March and we hope to have a
clearer idea which way to go by then.
The City is conducting a survey of all job descriptions, classifications, and
salaries for review. All Library employees are completing the surveys. The
study should be complete in about one year.
On Friday, January 17, Ms. Long attended the City’s Service Awards
presentation, at which the Library had two employees who qualified for
length of service: Debra Thomas, head of Technical Services, for twenty-
five years, and Robert Briggs, Circulation Supervisor, for ten years.
Ms. Long handed out copies of a highly complimentary review of the
Library’s summer reading program on Yelp, and an article from Pew
Research Center on the importance of libraries.
PROPOSED GIFT
TO LIBRARY:
Ms. Hunt gave a brief description of a proposed gift to the Library of a
model sailing ship, assembled by Mr. Floyd Kreitz. The display case is
48” x 16”. Ms. Hunt handed out copies of the gift policy and called for
discussion. The consensus was that there was not adequate space for the
model, that a glass case of that size could be a safety issue, and that a
model ship would not be of broad general interest to patrons. Dr.
Armstrong pointed out that the gift policy did not require the board to
appoint a committee; since the consensus was already clear to refuse the
gift, it could come to a vote immediately.
Dr. Armstrong moved the recommendation and Ms. Bristol seconded that
the committee send a letter of appreciation to Mr. Kreitz but regret that we
cannot accept the gift. The motion passed. Ms. Hunt will write the letter in
consultation with Ms. Long.
OTHER
BUSINESS: None.
ADJOURN-
MENT: Meeting was adjourned by Ms. Hunt at 4:35 p.m.
