MEMBERS
ABSENT: None
OTHERS
PRESENT: Betty Long, Library Director, Kay Carrasco, Recording Secretary, and

Affairs.
CALL TO
ORDER: Marna Hunt, President, called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Members
present were noted, proper quorum was met.
MINUTES: Ms. Hunt asked if there were any corrections or additions to the minutes of
the May 22nd meeting; there were none. Dr. Armstrong moved that the
minutes be accepted, Mr. Duran seconded, and the motion passed.
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT:
In addition to her written report Betty Long, Library Director, reported that
that we may be close to a solution on the HVAC issue, since per an earlier
Director’s report, all bids for complete replacement were far in excess of the
available budget for the work. When asked if there is yet an ETA on having
a fully functioning system, Ms. Long replied that we simply can’t know that
at this point.
Ms. Long noted that the library’s display has been set up at the fair grounds.
Due to leaks and flooding in the exhibit building from the recent heavy
rains, our display was placed in the window of our booth.
She also handed out the brief 2013-2014 Annual Report, which was attached
to a 3-color highlighting pen: Highlights with Highlighter!
COMMITTEE
APPOINTMENT:
Explaining that some programs draw crowds that exceed our seating
capacity, a “wonderful problem to have,” Ms. Long proposed that the
Board select a committee to work jointly with Library staff to study the
issue and make suggestions on a method to handle it as fairly and
smoothly as possible. Mr. Montgomery, Ms. Hembree, and Mr. Duran
volunteered; Ms. Long and children’s librarian Deanne Dekle will also be
on the committee. Ms. Hunt requested that the committee be prepared to
report back to the next Board meeting, October 23rd.
GO BOND: Ms. Hunt handed out brochures about General Obligation Bond B, which
highlighted the amounts that will be received by libraries in Chaves
County. She asked Board members to help disseminate the information
and encourage others to vote YES on the issue. She also pointed out that
the Friends of the Library paid for the printing of the brochures. Ms. Long
noted that the Friends will place ads in the newspaper in support of Bond
B. Dr. Armstrong volunteered to write a letter to the RDR editor to help
publicize the benefits of Bond B to all county citizens.
GUEST
SPEAKER: Michael Delello gave a brief talk outlining the work and responsibilities of
the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Mexico State Library. He
is currently serving as Acting State Librarian (while the search for a
permanent person is ongoing), as well as Deputy Cabinet Secretary for the
DCA. He has been touring the state to visit libraries and spoke of how
impressed he is with the Roswell Public Library.
Mr. Delello also handed out copies of a portion of a report commissioned
by the NMDCA and prepared by UNM’s Bureau of Business and
Economic Research. He spoke further about the changes and challenges
coming in the future of libraries, particularly digital developments, and
responded to comments and questions.
