The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers,
375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.

III. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES
1. Approval of the November 7, 2018 Commission Meeting Minutes

IV. BUSINESS
1. Selection of Fiesta Logo Design
Smejkal explained the vetting process used by staff to determine finalists for consideration
by the Commission. Five finalist designs were recommended by the sub-committee.
Discussion ensued.
Commissioners stated that they missed seeing all the submittals and recommended that
a representative from the Commission participate on the sub-committee in the future.
Commissioners reviewed the logo designs and selected Meghan Walton's submittal.

2. Discussion of the Town of Sahuarita and Sahuarita Unified School District IGA for Anza
Trail Park
Smejkal summarized the Inter Governmental Agreement (IGA) between the Town and
Sahuarita Unified School District (SUSD) for Anza Trail Park, and the recently approved
Amendment, which identifies that the Town will supplement maintenance of the sports
fields. The Town will augment sports field turf and upgrade irrigation; SUSD will continue in
their responsibility to maintain all other areas. Staff is working with SUSD to schedule field
regeneration tasks to avoid conflicts with school schedules.
Discussion ensued, and several commissioners expressed concerns regarding safe
playing conditions.
Public Comment: Chuck Borozinski voiced concerns about sand on the courts and
irregular field layouts.

3. Discussion on Proposed Revisions to the Parks and Recreation Area Design and
Development Standards Manual
Smejkal summarized the revisions to the Parks and Recreation Area Design and
Development Manual (PRADSM). The draft is written without a 50% opt-out of the
recreation area requirement available for any subdivision.
Draft document was missing from the agenda packet.
The revised PRADSM will be placed February agenda.

4. Discussion of a Proposed Ten Year Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Plan
Smejkal summarized the draft Capital Improvement Project plan (CIP).
Discussion of pickleball court and skate spot locations ensued.
There were no additional project recommendations from Commissioners.

V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS
1. Director and Commissioner Reports
Anamax Dog Park remodel project is complete. Quail Creek Dog Park is closed for
overseeding and will reopen on December 10. Dugouts at Anamax will receive new shade
covers I conjunction with an Eagle Scout project. At Anamax, volleyball court renovations
and LED lighting replacement continue. The Recreation Center reception counter remodel
project is underway.
New Recreation Coordinator Eliza Hoffman started end of November, and brings exciting
ideas to the Department. There are still three vacancies, one Recreation Leader and two
Recreation Aides. Adelina Martin, Recreation Manager is on leave through December.
Attendance at the Park and Play van at the Pecan Festival was a success; approximately 400
visitors, and 60 survey respondents. Parents Night Out is December 14th with games, crafts
and more. Winter/Spring activity guide is complete; expected delivery by weeks end. The
2019 drop-in fitness schedule has some changes, staff is looking for new instructors. New
rack cards to augment outreach were distributed. Winter Festival is December 15, parade
starts at 6. Sahuarita Teen Advisory Council (STAC) Open Mic event at La Posada Java was an
intergenerational mix, with attendance of eight; next is the Legacy Relay at Sahuarita Lake in
memory of teens who have passed. The Town's year long 25th Anniversary celebration kicks
off with an open house at Town Hall on January 18.
Staff is working on next year's budget.
Allen reported attending the December concert at the Lake and would like to see an
increase in attendance.

Commission will hold a meeting at the date and time specified below at the Sahuarita Town Hall Council
Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, Arizona. Members of the Commission will attend
either in person or by telephone conference call.
To better serve our community, the Council Chambers is wheelchair accessible. Persons with a disability
