Parks & Recreation Commission Meeting Minutes Regular Meeting Minutes May 1, 2019 6:30 PM The Parks and Recreation Commission of the Town of Sahuarita met in the Sahuarita Council Chambers, 375 West Sahuarita Center Way, Sahuarita, AZ 85629 on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. I. BUSINESS 1. Welcome and Introduction of New Commissioner - Jeff Ahern Huckins introduced recently appointed Commissioner Jeff Ahern. Ahern provided the commission with a summary of his personal and professional history. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 2. Sahuarita Teen Advisory Council (STAC) End of Year Recap Sahuarita Teen Advisory Council (STAC) President Breanna Field provided an update on 2018-19 STAC term activities. M. Ahern inquired about the process to join STAC. Thelma Magallanes, Recreation Leader, explained the application and interview process. Luna thanked STAC for their service. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY 3. Commissioner Attendance at the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) Conference Smejkal summarized the Arizona Parks and Recreation Association (APRA) 2019 Conference and the tentative education session schedule. Staff would like to ascertain the interest level in commission attendance. Huckins and Allen expressed interest in attending the conference. Staff will complete registration for commissioners attending the conference. RESULT: DISCUSSION ONLY V. COMMISSIONER AND DIRECTOR REPORT ON CURRENT EVENTS 1. Director and Commissioner Reports Fiesta Sahuarita 2019 was a success. Attendance was an estimated 10,000. Activities included vendors, a water park, foam bubble pit and a mascot parade. Food Bank donations, website and Snap Chat views increased this year. The Spring Festival Egg Hunt, and Arbor Day Celebration with an estimated attendance of 4,500, and 25 respectively incorporated the Town's 25th Anniversary. The Town thanked their volunteers by hosting its annual Volunteer Appreciation event. Upcoming events and activities are: Sabrosita Sahuarita May 3, Concert at the Lake May 4, Kids to Parks Day May 18, and Daddy Daughter Dance June 15. The Anza Trail sports field augmentation project to improve field conditions continues. Staff is now managing the field watering schedule, and turf renovations will continue when school is no longer in session. Landscaping at Quail Creek, North Santa Cruz and Anamax Dog Park continues. The Parks and Recreation Area Design and Development Manual (PRADSM) is on the May 13 Council Agenda. Chairperson Huckins will be there to represent the Commission. The fees that are currently in the PRADSM are now proposed as an amendment to the Town Fee Schedule. The Budget Study session is May 28. Commissioners commented on the condition of the parks and participation in events and activities.
