Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes
Monday, April 11, 2022, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Members Present: Lynne Mullen, Amy Stewart, Cynthia Nina-Soto, Tyler Carlton
Staff Present: Dominick Pangallo
1. Call to Order: 6:34 p.m.
2. Approval of March 14, 2022 minutes: Approved unanimously
3. Financial Updates:
Education Fund Scholarship Fund
March receipts: $91.75 March receipts: $120.14
Current balance: $7,493.79 Current balance: $8,724.90
Dominick reported that both funds took in less in March receipts than they had in the previous three
fiscal years. The Scholarship Fund balance is higher than it normally is in March, however, mostly
thanks to Cynthia’s marathon fundraising. The Education Fund balance is lower, due to the awarding
of more grants this past year than normal.
4. Old Business
a. Fundraising Updates: Tyler indicated that an event may be in development, and he will
reach out to the organizers at Salem Arts Festival, Pride, and Heritage Days about having a
table for the committee. Dominick reported that letters were sent to the cannabis
companies seeking donations. Cynthia was again thanked for her marathon, and she
suggested that other members might also want to do them in the future. Amy suggested a
“Light it up for education” event, similar to what other communities have done, where
residents “buy” a tea light and paper bag from the committee and on a select night
everyone in the community with a light puts it in front of their house or in a window to
show their support; all of the proceeds go to the scholarship fund. Cynthia suggested that
notable locals like elected officials or Marta Garcia could be asked to record social media
videos to help promote the event. The committee discussed the possibility of asking Annie
Brobst to assist with a fundraiser, as well.
5. New Business
a. Scholarship Awards event: Dominick suggested that the committee start thinking about
whether they want to do an in-person scholarship awards event again this year.
b. Thank You letters: Tyler asked that the next meeting agenda include a discussion about
whether the committee should send thank you letters to donors over a certain threshold.
Cynthia suggested that past donors who have given larger donations, but who have not yet
given this year, be directly approached with an ask.
c. 2022 scholarship applications: Tyler reported that only six scholarship applications have
been received so far, though applications usually come in closer to the May 31 st deadline as
more students finalize their college plans.

No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be
made to ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via
technological means. In the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post
on the city’s website an audio or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of
proceedings as soon as possible after the meeting.
