Scholarship & Education Committee Meeting – Draft Minutes
Monday, August 14, 2023, 6:30 P.M., meeting held remotely
Members Present: Cynthia Nina-Soto, Lynne Mullen, Brian Eiermann, Elizabeth McGovern, Gabriel
Yeager

1. Call to Order: 6:35 p.m.
2. Approval of June 20, 2023 minutes: McGovern moved for approval; Seconded by Mullen;
Approved 3-0-2
3. Financial Updates:
Education Fund Scholarship Fund
Balance: $9,512.76 Balance: $15,058.54
Questions from the committee:
• Is there a minimum that needs to be maintained?
• What is the difference between the numbers this month and those from the most recent agenda?
• Have we received any receipts since the last time? Can we see them graphed again as in previous
months?
4. Old Business: none.
5. New Business
Amy Stewart has stepped down from the Committee effective immediately due to family
obligations.
A new chair will need to be elected at the next meeting.
Future meeting dates:
• September 11, 2023 6:30pm
• October 2, 2023 6:30pm
• November 13, 2023 6:30pm
• December 11, 2023 6:30pm
• Education applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The committee can re-post about
them through City channels after the next meeting. The Mayor’s office will draft the
message, and share it via website, social media and and press release.
• A letter to the editor will be drafted and finalized at/by the next meeting, and then sent out.
At the next meeting, the committee will decide whether to use past winners and quotes.
• Lisa Peterson will find previous letters sent to larger corporations asking for donations to
use as examples in the future.

Pursuant to Chapter 107 of the Acts of 2022, this meeting of the Salem Scholarship & Education
Committee will be conducted via remote participation to the greatest extent possible. Specific
information and the general guidelines for remote participation by members of the public and/or
parties with a right and/or requirement to attend this meeting can be found on the city’s website, at
www.salemma.gov.
For this meeting, members of the public who wish to watch, listen or provide comment during the
meeting may do so in the following manner:

If any public comment is permitted, members of the public who have “raised their hand” in Zoom will
be called on by the chair to offer comment. In order to raise a hand, member of the public using the
Zoom computer or phone application may click the “Raise Hand” button; members of the public
dialing in may press “*9” to raise their hand to speak.
No in-person attendance of members of the public will be permitted, but every effort will be made to
ensure that the public can adequately access the proceedings in real time, via technological means. In
the event that we are unable to do so, despite best efforts, we will post on the city’s website an audio
or video recording, transcript, or other comprehensive record of proceedings as soon as possible after
the meeting.
