Page 2 of 4  September 18, 2024 Shawano, Wisconsin CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Jack Young called the Senior Citizens Commission meeting to order on Wednesday September 18,2024 at 9:00AM at Shawano City Hall. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL • Members present: Alderman Jack Young, Lynnae Zahringer, Joan Porter-Priem, Lois Flaig, Bonnie Wolf, and Roger Olson. • Absent: Dennis Zdiarsek, and Mayor Bruce Milavitz. • Also present: Matt Hendricks Rec Director, Tom Aumann, and Paula Landau Civic Center Coordinator. COMPLIANCE WITH OPEN MEETING LAW • Chairperson Young stated that we were in compliance with the open meeting law. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND/OR OTHER MATTERS AUTHORIZED BY LAW • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed agenda, seconded by Wolf. Motion carried by voice vote. APPROVAL OF SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES OF AUGUST 21, 2024 • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed minutes, seconded by Flaig. Motion carried by voice vote. PUBLIC COMMENTS PLEASE KEEP COMMENTS TO 3 MINUTES • None. PRESENTATION FROM TOM AUMANN HISTORICAL SOCIETY • Tom shared the history of Shawano and Shawano County. The Historical Society just did the headstone series on the Korean War at the Woodlawn Cemetery. A few years back they started with the Civil War. The City of Shawano hasn’t been here that long, but the presence of the lake and river have been here since the 1600 because of the French and the Jesuit priest who came through at this particular time. The Historical Society has a beautiful campus, roughly 3- 4 acres, with historical buildings. In the spring 4th graders come from all the schools in Shawano, to the Historical Society to learn about Wisconsin history, and the local history; it takes about 2 days. The City of Shawano started where the Shawano Historical Society is located. Sunset Island or Monkey Island. It is where the first sawmill was located. In 1843 Charles Farnsworth wanted to come up from Oshkosh to start a sawmill. The 1840’s in Milwaukee and southern Wisconsin was the first wave of German immigrants coming to Wisconsin. Tom told a story about the history of Shawano and showed different maps. A Jesuit map from 1688; Shawano Lake was a dot on the map. Maps from the years 1685,1843, 1855, 1870, and 1872 showed that Shawano County was on these maps. The map collection was bought for over $ 12,000.00; someone gave the Historical Society the money to buy the map collection. Tom told about the correlation between the Peshtigo fire of 1871 and Shawano County. They were interlaced at that time. The community is welcome to visit the Shawano Historical Society. They are always looking for volunteers. The Rhubarb Fest is the big fundraiser of the year. The Annual meeting is October 21,2024 at the City Hall, anyone is welcome. Discussion followed. REPORTS: Page 1 of 2 Page 3 of 4  • Civic Center Report: Paula Landau submitted a report for September to the committee members on the issues and/or happenings at the center. • Gift Shop Report: Bonnie submitted a report for September. On August 24th the gift shop handed out $1.00 coupons at the Farmers Market, they did very good the gift shop stayed open with tables outside. They have a new crafter that makes bird houses. October 5th is October Fest; the gift shop will be open with tables out front. Discussion followed. • Commission on Aging Report: None. BILLS • None. OLD BUSINESS • Rental Conflicts: None. Jack gave an update on adding a sidewalk by Sturgeon Park to make it more disability and senior friendly. Matt updated the members on the progress. Matt enlisted an engineering firm to come and look at the site. Monday, they had a survey crew out. Next step is to receive the report of the survey and then the opinion of cost. Hopefully they will see these this fall. When they know the results, they will come to the members. Discussion followed. NEW BUSINESS • Garden Update: The gardening season is winding down; it has been very dry. The fencing that was put up for the tubing parking has been working out ok. When the gardening season is done a letter will be sent out to the gardeners. The water pump is still not working, they are priming it by hand with a half a pail of water. Matt replied the pump is just losing its prime, as soon as it is primed it is the best pressure that’s ever been down there. In the fall we will pull all that out to see what’s going on. The pump is relatively new. Porter-Priem asked what is the backup plan in case is this happens next year. We need to get the pump functioning like it was in the past. Porter-Priem asked about plowing the garden this fall. Matt replied that the plowing can be done, it is already in the budget. On next month’s agenda add a review of the Garden Agreements, adding changes where needed. Discussion followed. • Round table discussion: None.
