Page 2 of 5  November 20, 2024 Shawano, Wisconsin CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Jack Young called the Senior Citizens Commission meeting to order on Wednesday November 20, 2024 at 9:00AM at Shawano City Hall. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL • Members present: Alderman Jack Young, Lynnae Zahringer, Joan Porter-Priem, Bonnie Wolf, Roger Olson and Dennis Zdiarstek. • Absent: Lois Flaig and Mayor Bruce Milavitz. • Also present: Matt Hendricks Rec Director, and Paula Landau Civic Center Coordinator. COMPLIANCE WITH OPEN MEETING LAW • Chairperson Young stated that we were in compliance with the open meeting law. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND/OR OTHER MATTERS AUTHORIZED BY LAW • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed agenda, seconded by Zahringer. Motion carried by voice vote. APPROVAL OF SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES OF OCTOBER 16, 2024 • Motion by Zahringer to approve the proposed minutes, seconded by Wolf. Motion carried by voice vote. PUBLIC COMMENTS PLEASE KEEP COMMENTS TO 3 MINUTES • None. REPORTS: • Civic Center Report: Paula Landau submitted a report for November to the committee members on the issues and/or happenings at the center. • Gift Shop Report: Bonnie submitted a report for November. The gift shop was a vendor at the St. James Craft sale, they did not do good; there were a lot of vendors selling the same thing. The gift shop will be open for the Tree Lighting and will be giving out $1.00 coupons; to spend $5.00 for $1.00 off. The gift shop will be open every Saturday in November. • Commission on Aging Report: None. BILLS • None. OLD BUSINESS • Rental Conflicts: None. Page 1 of 3 Page 3 of 5 NEW BUSINESS • Review 2024 Garden Agreement: Porter-Priem had some changes to be made for the 2025 Garden Agreement. Discussion followed on those ideas. Paula will turn the changes into Lisa. • Garden Update: Roger submitted a report, thank you letters were sent out to the gardeners on October 21,2024. The garden was disked early November. Everything was removed from the garden; Roger picked a gentleman’s carrot and another vegetable and took them over to him. There is a need for education and signage on how to prime the pump. Discussion followed. • Round table discussion: There will not be a December meeting. SET NEXT MEETING DATE • The next Senior Citizens Commission meeting will be on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 9:00 am at City Hall. Respectfully submitted, Paula Landau, Civic Center Coordinator Page 2 of 3 Page 4 of 5 October 2024 Dear Gardener(s): As this year’s gardening season comes to an end, the Senior Citizens Commission would like to thank you for taking part in the planting/harvesting of vegetables/flowers at the Lieg Park Gardens and subsequent clean up. We certainly had some issues with the water this season, but our hope is to have things rectified for next season. We thank you for connecting with us and bringing issues to our attention. The gardens couldn’t have been a success without you! FYI Current gardeners will be able to sign up for garden plots/boxes/tables in early 2025 if the - cleanup rules for 2024 were complied with. Certain plant material can be diseased and should be removed annually like vines for cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and melons as well as tomato plants. The plan is to have the garden plots disked this fall to get the soil turned over and tilled next spring prior to the 2025 planting season. Once again, thank you for being a part of the Lieg Park Gardens in 2024 and hope to see you next season. Any questions, please contact the garden caretaker via City Hall.
