Citizens Commission meeting to order on Wednesday January 15,2025 at 9:00AM at Shawano City Hall. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL • Members present: Alderman Jack Young, Lynnae Zahringer, Joan Porter-Priem, Bonnie Wolf, Lois Flaig, Roger Olson and Dennis Zdiarstek. • Absent: Mayor Bruce Milavitz • Also present: Jean Weston and Jennifer Steinbach with the Shawano Health Department and Paula Landau Civic Center Coordinator. COMPLIANCE WITH OPEN MEETING LAW • Chairperson Young stated that we were in compliance with the open meeting law. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND/OR OTHER MATTERS AUTHORIZED BY LAW • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed agenda, seconded by Wolf. Motion carried by voice vote. APPROVAL OF SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 20, 2024 • Motion by Flaig to approve the proposed minutes, seconded by Wolf. Motion carried by voice vote. PUBLIC COMMENTS PLEASE KEEP COMMENTS TO 3 MINUTES • None. PRESENTATION FROM NICK MAU SHAWANO HEALTH DEPARTMENT • Nick Mau was unable to come to the meeting to give the presentation. Jean Weston and Jennifer Steinbach gave the presentation. Jean Weston is a Public Health Nurse and Assistant Health Officer for Shawano and Menominee County Health Department and Jennifer Steinbach is a new Public Health Nurse. The subject they spoke on was Respiratory virus which is happening in our county. Last week the Wisconsin Department of Health services put out a press release about the increase Respiratory virus throughout the state. The state of Wisconsin sends out a weekly update, we are very high with respiratory illness in our state, also in the Northeast region which we are located in. Covid, RSV, and influenza rates are also increasing. Jennifer passed out 2 handouts to the members. One on respiratory illnesses and RSV vaccines for older adults. They explained the symptoms of Respiratory illnesses, RSV, influenza and covid symptoms, they are basically the same. A person should be tested so they can get the right medicine. We recommend the influenza and Covid vaccine. RSV is a respiratory virus, which is seen in children, 2 years old. There is a vaccine for babies, for pregnant women and for 75 years or older. At this point it’s just a one time vaccine. Anyone 50 or older, if there are any underlining conditions such as asthma, COPD, any kidney or liver problems, anyone with immunocompromise system, neurological or neuromuscular conditions, diabetes, it is recommended to talk to your doctor about Page 1 of 3 Page 3 of 5  getting the vaccine. Pertussis, Whooping cough is a high rate #4 in our county. Shawano and Menominee county is high, it is a bacterial infection. Very severe with children under a year. Pregnant women are recommended to get the vaccine and anyone that will be around the babies; grandparents, making sure they are up to date with their pertussis vaccine. Tetanus is recommended as a booster every 10 years which includes the pertussis vaccine, it is called the T-dab. The T-dab is available for free to anyone who is on Medicare, Medicare does not cover the 10-year booster. Bird flu is an influenza type of virus. It was discovered in China and other Asian countries. It was discovered in poultry and some humans. Humans would get quite ill, very high mortality rate. In the US in 2022 it was discovered in some poultry flocks, they depopulated the flocks and did bio security so they don’t have it spread from flock to flock. The birds were migratory birds. The geese and ducks; when they make their stops, pass it on to the domestic poultry. In March 2024 there was a dairy herd out west, the cows were having decrease milk production and showing signs of illness. They did some testing, and it was the strain of the bird flu. They were monitoring it and it spread from state to state, California got hit pretty bad, a lot of dairy herds were infected. They were doing surveillance on the farm workers; they did have some human cases: respiratory illness and conjunctivitis, which are one of the symptoms of bird flu in humans. From the research they did, the virus was in the milk of the cows, it was spreading through the milking parlors and people were getting infected through that exposure to the milk. Right now, the people at risk, are ones working with poultry flocks and people working in milking parlors, taking care of sick animals. In Wisconsin we don’t have any dairy herds infected. In the last month we have had 3 poultry flocks infected, 2 commercial poultry flocks in Barren and Bernet counties, and a backyard flock, about 90 birds in Kenosha County. In Barren County there was a human that came down with the symptoms of the bird flu. We are working on outreach to bigger farms to have clinics for the immunization of the seasonal flu for their workers, a lot of them do not have insurance. They are recommending the workers wear protective gear, gloves, mask and coveralls. Discussion followed. REPORTS: • Civic Center Report: Paula Landau submitted a report for January to the committee members on the issues and/or happenings at the center. • Gift Shop Report: Bonnie submitted a report for January. The gift shop is open on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10-4pm. When they were open in November on Saturdays, they did better on Saturdays then at the Crafts fairs. March 8,2025 is the Cabin Fever Craft Fair at the Civic Center. They had profit sharing for the crafters. Discussion followed. • Commission on Aging Report: None. BILLS OLD BUSINESS • Rental Conflicts: None. NEW BUSINESS • Review 2025 Garden Agreement: Porter-Priem had some changes, everything looks good. • Winterizing the Facility: Tom and Mike came to check the furnace and changed the filters, and everything was running good. • Round Table Discussion: Paula reported that her last day of work will be April 30,2025, she will be retiring. Discussion followed. SET NEXT MEETING DATE • The next Senior Citizens Commission meeting will be on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at 9:00am at City Hall.
