Page 2 of 4  March 19, 2025 Shawano, Wisconsin CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Jack Young called the Senior Citizens Commission meeting to order on Wednesday, March 19, 2025 at 9:00 AM at Shawano City Hall. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL • Commission Members Present: Alderperson Jack Young, Bonnie Wolf, Joan Porter-Priem, Roger Olson, Lynnae Zahringer, and Lois Flaig. • Absent and Excused: Dennis Zdiarstek. • Staff Members Present: Deputy Clerk Leah Pierquet, Parks and Recreation Director Matt Hendricks, Tara Kelliher, and Lisa Passon. COMPLIANCE WITH OPEN MEETING LAW • Chairperson Young stated that we were in compliance with the open meeting law. APPROVAL OF AGENDA AND/OR OTHER MATTERS AUTHORIZED BY LAW • Motion by Porter-Priem to approve the proposed agenda, seconded by Wolf. Motion carried by voice vote. APPROVAL OF SENIOR CITIZEN COMMISSION MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 19, 2025 • Motion by Olson to approve the proposed minutes, seconded by Flaig. Motion carried by voice vote. REPORTS: • Civic Center Report: Hendricks gave an update, noting that Paula is retiring at the end of April and introduced the commission to Lisa Passon, who currently works at the front desk at the Recreation Center. Lisa will be filling in for Paula as the Civic Center Coordinator as of May 1st. Lisa will train with Paula during the month of April to learn the job duties that being the Civic Center Coordinator requires. With the Recreation Center being closed, we are able to place an existing qualified staff member to fill in this position in the short term. This position will be revisited once the Recreation Center is open again and that date is to be determined at this time. Hendricks will discuss the Recreation Center project in more detail at next month's Senior Citizens Commission meeting. Discussion continued. • Gift Shop Report: Wolf reported the gift shop had been closed. They will open again on Tuesday. The Cabin Fever craft sale went very well. They had 13 spots open and people requested this event again in the fall. The gift shops' next event is Rhubarbfest. • Commission on Aging Report: None. BILLS • None. OLD BUSINESS • Rental Conflicts: None. NEW BUSINESS Page 1 of 2 Page 3 of 4  • Mobility concerns within the BID district:  Porter-Priem handed out a sheet of different points she had regarding the elderly and disabled being able to move around stores within the BID District.  Zahringer mentioned this issue became more prominent for her during COVID when her mother had a difficult time shopping once they removed chairs and benches from stores. Adding if stores could have access to seating for elderly or disabled people when they need a break.  Porter-Preim added that mothers with strollers and young children possibly have issues getting through some stores.  Alderperson Young stated anything to make life easier for the elderly and disabled would be helpful.  Deputy Clerk Pierquet mentioned that the commission cannot tell businesses what they can or cannot do. However, these concerns can be brought to the BID Board for consideration and discussion.  Revisit this topic at next month's Senior Citizen Commission meeting. Discussion continued. • Round table discussion: Alderperson Young mentioned he read about proposed changes to the local social security office and telephone customer service options. Alderperson Young encourages commission members to look into this issue and contact their representatives regarding this issue. Discussion continued.
