BOARD OF HEALTH MEETING

MINUTES
Attendance: Vickie Dominski, Cassie Hadley, Jerry Bzdawka, Peggy Clark, Dr.
Sandra Scalzitti, Jackie Ove
Excused: Karen Stewart Absent: Cyndi Kieck, Liz Keller, Matt Damon
1. Call to order – meeting called to order at 6:35pm.
2. Approval of the minutes from the February 11, 2021 meeting – Motion made by
V. Dominski, second by C. Hadley. All voted aye. Motion carried.
3. Medical Advisor Report – Higher vaccination rates (over 50%) of Covid19 show
decrease in Covid19 cases. However, there is an increase of cases of flu, RSV,
croup, rhino virus, and common cold coronavirus, possibly due to less use of
masks. Hospital vaccination sites will be closing soon. On another issue, there
has been an increase of traffic fatalities noted.
4. Public Health Administrator Report
a. Coronavirus (COVID-19) update: Disease Investigation, Testing,
Vaccination – Covid19 cases are low. Testing sites – many going to their
healthcare providers, urgent care, ER. Healthcare looking at a multiplex
text which would test for various respiratory illnesses.
SMSFHD continues to push vaccines. South Shore Covid Vaccine Clinic
is scheduled to close June 24th. The Health Dept. accepting walk-ins at
SM Health Dept. currently from 9am to 3pm., using incentives, such as
gas only cards. Also doing outreach at Farmers Market, SF Music events,
and libraries with informational booths. Held a clinic at Community Medical
Services in SM for their clients. Schools – southside superintendents
meeting every other week, working on school policies related to covid19.
SM schools still have mandatory mask policy. Some SM schools working
on improving ventilation according to Cassie H.

Health Department
b. Health Program Updates: Staff at HD in process of cleaning out and
reorganizing the dept. due to storage needed for Covid19 clinic supplies.
Also taking critical look at our programming. K. Dorniak implementing a
breastfeeding survey for new mothers. Looking at training for lactation
counselor possibly. Quick response team still active due to grant for 4
cities. Overdose fatality reviews are held. Still working on a reproductive
health site, especially since chlamydia and gonorrhea cases are rising.
Also, continuing working on community health improvement plan. New
priorities for the community. New bike helmets and helmet fitting program.
Staff trained in fitting.
Milwaukee County Unified Emergency Operations Center continues to
work on planning. Hoping to work with Milwaukee county agencies on
mental health issue.
St Francis High School experienced a recent teen suicide. They are doing
research on a suicide prevention team.
Community Night Outs for SM and SF scheduled for same night – Aug. 4.
c. Department Staffing Updates: Grant funds are available to hire a full-time
public health specialist here. We still have temporary staff as vaccinators.
Many Public Health Administrators in the state have retired, been fired, or
resigned, and departments are having a hard time filling positions.
5. Annual Report 2020
JMO gave overview. Dr. Scalzitti moved to receive report and place on file,
Peggy Clark seconded. All ayes. Motion carried.
6. Discussion regarding allowing Bee Keeping in South Milwaukee
One SM alderperson wanting to allow bee keeping. Health Dept. has no
expertise in this area. No one attending meeting is interested in pursuing
changing the ordinance.
7. Election of Officers Chair, Vice-Chair, and Secretary
J. Bzdawka moved to keep officers as is currently (Cyndi Kieck as chair, Liz
Keller as vice chair). Second by C. Hadley and P. Clark. Motion carried.
8. Adjournment – Moved to adjourn by P. Clark, V. Dominski. Adjourned 7:25pm.
