Minutes of February 8, 2022
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission meeting was called to order by Josh Regan at
6:00 p.m. at Doug Woog Arena
Members Present: Josh Regan, Cindy Bonowitz, Mike Lindamood, Ron Morgan
Members Absent: Lori Miller
Others Present: Joe Kaliszewski, Shannon Young, Mercedes Miklya, John Wilcox, Seth Anderson
1. INTRODUCTIONS –none
2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Motion by Josh R and second by Mike L to approve the Minutes of October 10, 2021.
4 Yays O Nays Motion Approved.
No action was taken to approve the December 14, 2021 Minutes-quorum not met.
3. OLD BUSINESS
3A. Recreation Program Updates – Outdoor Rinks, School Break Trips
Flannel Fest: Ms. Miklya presented an overview of 1st Annual Flannel Fest. A weeklong event with winter
activities. Ms. Miklya partnered with Concord Lanes, Croatian Hall, SSP police and South Metro fire. The
events will run from Wednesday through Sunday, Lumberjack Lanes (bowling), Starlight Sledding, Babe’s
Boot Hockey Tournament, and Flapjacks and Flannels. Concord lanes is hosting Lumberjack Lanes with
reduced lane and shoe rentals. The Police department will be hosting hot chocolate at the warming house
and the fire department will install a stabilization rope for patrons at Starlight Sledding. The police
department has also registered a team for Babe’s boot hockey tournament on Saturday. The Croatian Hall
has offered to host Flapjacks and Flannels, they will be donating back to South St. Paul Parks and
Recreation’s for youth programs.
3B. Doug Woog Arena updates
Mr. Wilcox noted the High School Boys and Girls tournament went well. Looking into how to
handle the school buses next year during the drop off and pick up. The Gopher/St. Thomas game
was a success, a lot of work went into organizing the game and logistics of parking and shuttles.
Game tickets were sold out. Volunteers helped along with staff with concessions. Thanks to John
Wilcox all the staff at Woog Arena and Mercedes Miklya for all the hard work making this event
a huge success! Mr. Wilcox noted they replaced three hot water heaters. Mr. Wilcox noted they
will be looking into replacing a Zamboni in the near future.
3C. Wakota Trailhead & Overlook – FLAP Grant
Ms. Young noted there were no updates to this at this time. Funding amount for the 2021 grant is
still unknown.
3F. Park Assignments/Visit Reports
No new updates currently.
4. NEW BUSINESS -
A. Tour of Doug Woog Arena
Mr. Anderson gave an overview of the operations at Doug Woog Arena.
5. Other Business
Board Member Ron Morgan noted this will be his last meeting as he will be not be renewing his
position on the board. Thank you Ron for your time on the board!
6. ADJOURNMENT – Next Meeting: March 8th, 2022 at City Hall
